Acai is a beautiful rich royal purple coloured berry from the Brazilian Rain Forest in South America.
Acai has most recently become a very popular super food in North America, Australia and Europe due to intense marketing and popularization campaigns. It has for many years been a popular fruit in Brazil, made into fruit purees, ice creams, soft drinks and super food health drinks. In fact it has been drunk by indigenous Rain forest dwellers for probably thousands of years.

FOLKLORE AND HISTORY OF ACAI
In Brazilian herbal medicine, the oil of the Acai fruit is used to treat diarrhea; an infusion of the grated fruit rind is used as a topical wash for skin ulcers; and, the fruit seeds are crushed and prepared in an infusion for fevers. In the Peruvian Amazon, an infusion of the toasted crushed seeds is used for fever. In Colombia, where the trees grow along the Pacific coast line, it is called naidí and the fruit is turned into a common and popular drink.
Easily the most common use of the Acai fruit by Amazonians is the dark purple juice. The juice is extracted from the small round fruit by soaking the seeds in water to soften the thin outer shell and then squeezing and straining them to produce a very tasty, dense purple liquid. Acai liquid is served fresh and ice cold with (or sometimes without) sugar and tapioca flour. It is a nourishing and refreshing drink that is also used to produce ice cream, liquor, mousses and sweets in general. Consumption of up to 2 litres per day of this highly nutritious juice has been recorded amongst indigenous populations. Acai juice has been and remains, an extremely important part of northern native South American diets and has become very popular throughout all socio-economic levels.
Acai contains high levels of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid known to have a variety of benefits for human health. Of the 32 grams of fat contained in 100 grams of açaí fruit pulp and skin powder, over 56% consists of oleic acid, making açaí berries one of the richest known natural sources of this important fatty acid.
Acai contains relatively high levels of ß-sitosterol - around 90% of total sterols, which are present at approximately 0.5 mg per gram of dry weight. ß-sitosterol is a phytoesterol that is thought to reduce blood cholestrol levels by competing with dietary cholesterol for absorption.
Acai also contains anthocyanins and proanthocyanins as the most abundant phytochemicals, as well as several other flavonoids (including homoorientin, orientin, isovitexin, scoparin, and taxifolin deoxyhexose, in addition to numerous unknown flavonoids).
TYPICAL PREPARATIONS AND DOSAGE
1 teaspoon of freeze dried Acai powder taken with liquid 1 - 3 times per day is a sufficient dose to effect one's health, when taken over a period of time.
