Bentonite Clay Information

NAME
Bentonite Clay

ALSO KNOWN AS
Bentonite clay is also known as Montmorillonite clay and Fuller's earth. Bentonite clay is the main ingredient in most commercial detox products and as such is sold under many different brand names.

ORIGIN
Bentonite clay is a mineral deposit and can be found wherever the correct geological conditions occur. There are deposits of Bentonite all over the world and ours comes from Italy. Dietary Bentonite Clay should not be confused with the other sort of Bentonite, which is used in the aggregates industry.

TRADITIONAL USES AND MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Some experts believe that clay was used medicinally by both Homo erectus and Homo neanderthalensis. The oldest evidence of geophagy (earth eating) practiced by humanoids (in this case Homo habilis ) comes from the prehistoric site at Kalambo Falls in Africa.

The earliest surviving historical record of medicinal clay use is from ancient Mesopotamia.
A wide variety of clays are known to be used for medicinal purposes. External applications, from the clay therapies espoused by Mahatma Ghandi to clay baths offered in health spas are very popular.

People from various parts of the world also use clay widely for geophagy. Various clays are used which have different medicinal properties. Bentonite clay has long been used as a detox aid due to it's physical properties. Anhydrous Bentonite clay swells up and becomes porous when mixed with water. This process causes the Bentonite to become electrically charged so that as it passes through the alimentary canal it draws toxins from the digestive system. For this reason Bentonite clay is unsurpassed as a dietary detox aid that eliminates contaminants.

TYPICAL PREPARATIONS AND DOSAGE
1/4 of a teaspoon up to 4 times a day mixed with a little water or (more commonly in detox programmes) apple juice.

PRECAUTIONS
Bentonite and other medicinal clays should not be taken internally with life-sustaining prescribed medications without careful medical supervision
Bentonite and other medicinal clays should not be used by people with an iron intolerance.
