MSM Information
NAME MSM ALSO KNOWN AS Methylsulfonylmethane, (CH3)2SO2.
ORIGIN MSM is made by adding oxygen atoms to DMSO, the main ingredient of MSM. There are 2 sources of DMSO, lignin and hydro-carbons. Lignin is the glue that holds the wood fibres together in trees, all the DMSO that goes into our MSM is lignin based. Hydro-carbons come from crude oil and fossil fuel and are definitely not therapeutic for the body. Be sure to ask which kind your MSM is when purchasing.
PARTS USED Lignin, (tree glue), and oxygen. TRADITIONAL USES AND MEDICINAL PROPERTIES MSM is essentially a naturally occurring substance in foods, it is found in raw fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds. MSM is sulphur, and sulphur is known to be one of the basic elements of life, the 4th most abundant mineral in the body. Sulphur is active in maintaining the correct balance of acid / alkaline in the body. It is vital to the creation and regeneration of the bodys tissues, and is found in every cell. One of the essential components in all life forms, Sulfur is involved in amino acid production, connective tissue, skin, hair, nails, enzymes, hormones, and immunoglobulins. It is held in the muscles, skin, bones, nails and hair. When this mineral becomes deficient a number of symptoms can occur. A deficiency in sulphur can cause slow growth, fatigue, inefficiency in the body to deal with potential allergens, weak joints and connective tissue, poor immune response. Dr. Stanley Jacobs, M.D. Director of the DMSO Clinic and Professor of Surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University, has conducted clinical studies on MSM dietary supplements and used it with his patients for over 20 years and has documented his findings in the book entitled "The Miracle of MSM". In the book Dr. Stanley Jacobs lists MSM's most significant actions. MSM is an analgesic (pain controller), MSM brings relief from inflammation, MSM dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow, MSM blocks the action of cholinesterase, thereby helping to restore normal bowel activity, MSM reduces muscle spasms, MSM alters the cross linking process in collagen, therefore reducing scar tissue, MSM has anti parasitic properties (particularly for giardia), MSM has an immune normalizing effect, as observed in some autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and scleroderma. MSM helps the body respond to allergens, and recover from allergies. Dr. Jacobs lists the following as the most frequent health conditions responding to MSM , Wear-and-tear arthritis Chronic back pain Muscle pain TMJ problems Rheumatoid arthritis Chronic headaches Fibromyalgia Emphysema Tendonitis and bursitis Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Post-traumatic pain and inflammation Asthma Heartburn Allergies Connective tissue and joint flexibility Immune health Osteoporosis Digestive disorders, Circulation Cell vitality Athletic injuries Tendinitis Gastrointestinal ailments Scar tissue Carpal tunnel syndrome Acne Collagen synthesis Pain Hair, Skin, Nails Antioxidant protection Toxin elimination Energy levels Concentration Infections
TYPICAL PREPARATIONS AND DOSAGE MSM should be taken daily, a typical dose is anything from 2g - 8g. It should be introduced slowly starting with 1g - 2g per day, then gradually increased.
Higher doses are typically necessary to experience therapeutic effects. A person suffering multiple allergic symptoms during pollen season may require more than 8 grams of MSM per day.
Results are individual, and it needs to be said there is no guarantee this will work for everybody, however some people experience improvements initially, some after a few days, others after a month. So as with every solution for health it is worth maintaining a program for at least one month.
PRECAUTIONS MSM is safe for people currently taking medications. It should be noted, however, that MSM can thin blood, therefore it should be approved by a licensed doctor when used in conjunction with blood thinning medication. It is safe for children and pregnant women. MSM is not similar to inorganic sulfides, sulfites, and sulfates to which many people are allergic.
