NAME Wormwood LATIN NAME Artemisia absinthum.
ALSO KNOWN AS Wormwood, absinthium, green ginger, absinthe, old woman, southernwood PARTS USED Leaves, or flowering tops. FOLKLORE AND HISTORY Wormwood has a magical witching tradition background, and is used for exorcisms, and protection. It is the active ingredient used to make the alcoholic drink absinthe, and is thought to have consiouness shifting properties. TYPICAL PREPARATIONS AND DOSAGE Wormwood tincture 100ml 1-4 ml tincture x 3/day PRECAUTIONS Since wormwood contains thujone, a chemical similar to tetratetrahydrocannibinol (THC) which is found in marijuana, the FDA has placed wormwood in the unsafe category. It has been reported that thujone may cause nerve damage and other side effects. Do not take if you are pregnant. Take only in small doses and for no more than 4-5 weeks at a stretch.
