The last thing any woman trying to navigate their adulthood wants to hear from her doctor is that she’s got a hormonal disorder. Even worse so, it being a disorder that you’ve been told is likely to contribute to you not being able to have a period.
It can be debilitating hearing such words. You feel like your body can’t do the basics such as having a cycle. You feel shame and you feel let down. If this is all sounding a bit too familiar for you, then stay here. I’m going to share why it is is imperative that rather than putting all of your energy into trying to get a period, to try looking at your body as a whole instead. A great quote from a great author, Barbara Wren stated that “Menstruation is linked to liver function, as the planner of the body that decides the regularity”. Our liver plays a huge role when it comes to our menstrual cycle, something we wouldn’t have necessarily thought about, right? Here is why YOU should believe that you are in control and that you can get your period back.
Consider your environment
When we think about our menstrual health and gaining back control of it, the last thing we tend to think about is our surroundings. This can be from what we are use for cooking and cleaning but also who we are surrounding ourselves with and who we are choosing to spend time with. If we don’t implement healthy boundaries in our lives, people can be incredibly draining which can make us more stressed than we are aware of.
From the products we use to clean our house to the candles we use to try keep us ‘calm’ after a long day could actually be doing more harm than we think. The toxins that are released from these products can play havoc with our liver and if our liver is overburdened, our body trying to regulate our hormones to have a regular cycle isn’t going to be priority.
Look at your lifestyle
Living in 2022, I’m sure most of us can say that we live a busy life and can admit that we don’t always put ourselves first. When we let our diet and lifestyle slip, our bodies will do the same and in return, it won’t work quite as we’d like it to.
When we take a look at our lives, it can seem like we want to wear a badge of honour when we admit to taking too much on or working multiple jobs that result in burn out. Rest is essential for us to get our periods back. Ovulation takes place when the body feels safe enough to do so. Imagine your body wanting to prepare itself to create another life, is it going to want to do that when you’re juggling 10 things at once?
Mental Health
We still have such a long way to go when reducing shame, guilt and the overall stigma when it comes to talking about our mental wellbeing. When our mental health dips and we aren’t in a good place, it can cause a negative chain reaction. Of course, this can make us feel bad and the idea of getting our period back seem incredibly overwhelming but to remember that our mental health comes first is paramount and trusting that this belief in itself will put us on the right path is key.
Prioritising Sleep
It is said that every hour we sleep before midnight is worth two hours of sleep after midnight. What this can do for our bodies in terms of healing and cleansing is huge. At the end of a day when when we have a build up of toxicity in our cells, it is natural to sleep and cleanse.
Magnesium plays a huge role when it comes to our bodies overall function. If our levels fall low, it can contribute to anxiety, insomnia, sleep issues and so fourth. Magnesium is best when absorbed through the body so epsom salt baths twice a week would be a fantastic way to increase your levels.
Consider Supplements
Supplements, particularly when directed and selected by a Naturopath can be a wonderful way to kickstart our bodies and put them on the right path for optimal health.
It is incredibly important to look at both our gut and liver when considering what else is going on in the body. It can help us understand why certain things are happening for us too. For example, they call the gut the second brain. Think about it. If our gut health isn’t great, imagine its chain reaction! Once these are supported and are functioning well, the possibilities are endless when it comes to regaining your health.
Our Mindset - Remember that YOU are in charge of your health
It’s really easy to slip into a negative mindset for example when you have just been given a hormonal diagnosis by your doctor. It can debilitating in fact. You feel as if you need to be given the tools to be able to help yourself or at least know where to start.
Naturopathy and holistic health is all about shared learning. The information we hold from others with similar interests is so powerful, even more so when we retain this knowledge and pass it on. Remembering that we are in charge of our health and future is equally as powerful. We have to believe that we can reach optimal health and what comes with that such as a healthy menstrual cycle because as a promise to you, you CAN have that. The Secret by Rhonda Byrne is a fantastic book when reiterating this. Be patient, you can do it and you will do it.
