I am always open to trying new plant-based protein products, so when TVP Mince came to Indigo Herbs I was keen to try it out.
When you pick up the bag the mince feels quite chunky inside, however, when I opened it I was quite surprised to find it was light in colour with slightly larger 'bits' than expected. Not quite chunks, but the pieces are a bit bigger than Quorn mince.

After some experimentation, I have found my favourite preparation method is to add a cup of mince to a saucepan and just about cover it with veggie stock. I let it simmer for 5 – 7 minutes, or until it reaches a texture to my liking. It is then ready to be added to any dish I like, such as hearty winter stews, pasta bakes, chilli or shepherd’s pie.
There is a chewiness to the mince that I especially enjoy. Next, I am going to experiment with a binder, such as egg, and shape some simple patties. Add in some fried onion and Cajun spice and (hopefully) barbecues will never be the same!
Because it’s not frozen, TVP Mince doesn’t take up valuable freezer space which has quickly made it a store cupboard essential. Its ease-of-use makes this mince great for batch cooking and meal prepping. At 24g of protein in each 30g serving, TVP is great for a post workout meal, especially if you're on a budget and looking for an affordable plant protein. Additionally, I find it keeps me fuller for longer on days when I eat it for lunch.
It is also high in many essential minerals including; copper, zinc, iron, manganese and phosphorous, and just one serving provides over 25 percent of the recommended daily intake for folate. Furthermore, it is certified organic and GMO free - what's not to love?
