This spicy, warming Golden Milk is the perfect bedtime drink - allowing your body to gently detox whilst you sleep. Known as the "Queen of the Spices", Turmeric is renowned for it health benefitting properties. Powerfully antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, this recipe includes black pepper which will increase the bioavailability of the active ingredient "curcumin" by upto 2000%. Not only is it extremely good for you, this moreish drink is a real cuddle in a cup.

Method

To Make the Paste

  1. Gently melt the coconut oil in a bain marie or bowl over a pan of water.
  2. Mix the Turmeric Powder, Black Pepper and Water and heat gently over a low heat for a couple of minutes – keep stirring.
  3. Add the melted coconut oil and keep stirring for a further 3-4 minutes until the paste is formed.

 

To Make the Milk

  1. Put the milk, Turmeric Paste, Coconut Oil and spices in a pan.
  2. Heat gently over a low heat – do not boil.
  3. When it is warmed through, add Yacon Syrup to taste.
  4. Pour into your mug – sprinkle a little extra black pepper on top (optional).
  5. Relax and enjoy!
Benefits

It is well known that the powerful active component of Turmeric is curcumin (from curcuminoids - a group of antioxidants that impart the characteristic golden colour). Studies show this compound is a natural anti-inflammatory with a strong antioxidant capacity. Black pepper, more specifically its active constituent “piperine”, has been shown to enhance the bioavailability of curcumin by up to 2000%.

Turmeric is an immune booster, increasing the expression of perforin - a protein that plays an important role in immune response. Also powerfully antioxidant, it not only contains antioxidants, it actually increases the activity of the body's own antioxidant enzymes. 

It can improve digestion by stimulating the gallbladder and preventing inflammation of the digestive tract. Other benefits include; improved brain function, arthritis pain relief and liver detoxification.
