In Brazil Acerola juice is almost the national drink as it is consumed as much as orange juice is in North America. This species is native to Central America, most notably Mexico, although it has now spread as far as Peru in the South and Texas in the North of America, and also the Caribbean. Not only does Acerola Cherry have a high vitamin C. content, but also a great deal of other vitamins which is why the Brazilians not only use Acerola juice as a refreshing drink and as a health tonic. It was in the 1940’s that scientists from Puerto Rico found that the Acerola Cherry was incredibly rich in vitamins. It soon became very popular and some countries wouldn’t allow the trade in the juice. As an ornamental tree the Acerola is used by the Japanese for bonsai training and is also used to decorate the homes of peoples of Latin America.
Acerola is an evergreen shrub or small tree with spreading branches on a short trunk. It is usually 2–3 m (6.6–9.8 ft) tall, but sometimes reaches 6 m in height. The trees flower in pretty little pink clusters that eventually turn into fruit. Fruits from the tree mature to a diameter of 0.5 to 1 inch and develop into bright red fruits similar to cherries. The cherries deteriorate rapidly after they’re picked, with unappealing changes noticeable within 4 hours after they're harvested.
