Astragalus has a long and distinguished history not only in Traditional Chinese Medicine but also among the tribes of Native American Indians and Persian Medicine. Indigo Herbs is proud to bring this herb out of the Asian sub continent and into your homes in the form of Astragalus Tincture and Astragalus Root Tea. These two products are of the finest quality available and form a part of the back bone of Chinese remedies.

There are many different species of Astragalus throughout the world but was primarily made famous by the Chinese. Used in China since around 200 BC, Astragalus was immortalised in Shennongs Materia Medica and has been used as an intricate part of Chinese Medicine ever since. It is believed to support Chi, the life force that upholds life in the body and the first defence against disease. In the Americas Astragalus was known to the Native American Indians who introduced it to the first European settlers in the late 17th century. It wasn't until the 18th century that Herbalists in the US started to investigate the properties of Astragalus and use it as a part in traditional remedies.

Native to China, Mongolia and Korea this perennial grows to about a half meter in height and loves rocky outcrops that are exposed to sun. Astragalus produces white to pale yellow flowers, similar to those of the pea family, and leaves of a pale green colour. The root part of this plant holds all of its medicinal properties and can take up to 5 years to mature. When sliced open the root is yellow, tastes sweet, and has a fibrous texture.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

After 5 years of growth the root of the Chinese Astragalus plants are mature and ready for harvest. Indigo Herbs Astragalus roots are harvested and identified by plant experts before the leaves and small stem parts stripped away leaving only the root. Only the best prime examples of the root are used in our Astragalus Root Tea. Damaged or underdeveloped roots are discarded through a process of elimination. The best root matter is then slow dried out of direct sunlight and tested for pollutants to make sure that you get only the very finest root for your tea. This ensures that the plant is of pharmacoepial grade and is good for purpose.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Astragalus Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Serving:

20 drops from the glass dropper equals approximately 1ml.

After 5 years of growth the root of the Chinese Astragalus plants are mature and ready for harvest. Indigo Herbs Astragalus roots are harvested and identified by plant experts before the leaves and small stem parts stripped away leaving only the root. Only the best prime examples of the root are used in our Astragalus Tincture. Damaged or underdeveloped roots are discarded through a process of elimination. The Astragalus root then undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

Indigo Herbs
Product ordered, dispatched and received within 24 hours. Discount voucher for next order included. The only complaint I have is that the herb I ordered, Damiana powder Is the most disgusting tasting substance I have ever come across, no matter what I put it in. If you are considering buying it, get the capsules, I will for my next order.

I am a returning customer to Indigo …
I am a returning customer to Indigo herbs. All previous orders were without problems. On my current order I tried without success to input a voucher code. There was no place to enter the code on the site when I made my order on this occasion. I sent an e mail to this effect to Indigo herbs and the response was to say the least, not very helpful and no follow up to the customer. No phone call, no follow up e mail, nothing. I am to say the least very disappointed and may take my custom elsewhere where it may be most appreciated. The voucher would have saved me the postage costs to Ireland, but could not be inserted on this occasion. This Matter has been resolved and I wish to reaffirm the 5 star rating to Indigo Herbs.
