There are many different species of Astragalus throughout the world but this herb was primarily made famous by the Chinese. Used in China since around 200 BCE, Astragalus was immortalised in Shennongs Materia Medica and has been used as an intricate part of Chinese Medicine ever since. It is believed to support Chi, the life force that upholds life in the body and the first defence against disease. In the Americas Astragalus was known to Indigenous peoples who introduced it to the first Europeans in the late 17th century. It wasn't until the 18th century that Herbalists in the US started to investigate the properties of Astragalus and use it as a part in traditional remedies.
Native to China, Mongolia and Korea this perennial grows to about a half meter in height and loves rocky outcrops that are exposed to sun. Astragalus produces white to pale yellow flowers, similar to those of the pea family, and leaves of a pale green colour. The root part of this plant holds all of its medicinal properties and can take up to 5 years to mature. When sliced open the root is yellow, tastes sweet, and has a fibrous texture.
