Although prevalent throughout the 20th century in Europe, America and Russia, the consumption of the common cultivated oat strain does not stem from ancient origins. There is however a reference to its cultivation in the ancient Indian epic poem the Mahabharat thought to have been written around the 8th or 9th century BC.

The oldest known discovery of an oat plant comes from archaeological sites in Egypt dating back 2,000 BC although the plants are believed to be representative of weeds and not a cultivated plant. The oldest known cultivated remains of Avena Sativa were found in caves in Switzerland dating to the Bronze-age. The oat plant is thought to have been spread throughout Europe by the Romans and then onto North America in the late 1600's by European settlers.

Avena Sativa is the naturalised form of of the wild oat variety Avena fatua. In fact there are over 25 different species in the Avena species. There are now many different cultivated strains from crossing different species from different parts of the world.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Avena Sativa Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Manufacture Process

Grown in the UK, the crops of Avena Sativa used to make Indigo Herbs Avena Sativa Tincture undergo stringent checks to insure all plants develop to their fullest potential whilst adhering to exceptionally high quality standards throughout their life. After careful selection and cleaning the tops of the Oat plant undergo a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

None known, however proceed with caution if sensitive to gluten as this is an extract of Oats.

Indigo Herbs
Product ordered, dispatched and received within 24 hours. Discount voucher for next order included. The only complaint I have is that the herb I ordered, Damiana powder Is the most disgusting tasting substance I have ever come across, no matter what I put it in. If you are considering buying it, get the capsules, I will for my next order.

I am a returning customer to Indigo …
I am a returning customer to Indigo herbs. All previous orders were without problems. On my current order I tried without success to input a voucher code. There was no place to enter the code on the site when I made my order on this occasion. I sent an e mail to this effect to Indigo herbs and the response was to say the least, not very helpful and no follow up to the customer. No phone call, no follow up e mail, nothing. I am to say the least very disappointed and may take my custom elsewhere where it may be most appreciated. The voucher would have saved me the postage costs to Ireland, but could not be inserted on this occasion. This Matter has been resolved and I wish to reaffirm the 5 star rating to Indigo Herbs.
