Although prevalent throughout the 20th century in Europe, America and Russia, the consumption of the common cultivated oat strain does not stem from ancient origins. There is however a reference to its cultivation in the ancient Indian epic poem the Mahabharat thought to have been written around the 8th or 9th century BC.
The oldest known discovery of an oat plant comes from archaeological sites in Egypt dating back 2,000 BC although the plants are believed to be representative of weeds and not a cultivated plant. The oldest known cultivated remains of Avena Sativa were found in caves in Switzerland dating to the Bronze-age. The oat plant is thought to have been spread throughout Europe by the Romans and then onto North America in the late 1600's.
Avena Sativa is the naturalised form of of the wild oat variety Avena fatua. In fact there are over 25 different species in the Avena species. There are now many different cultivated strains from crossing different species from different parts of the world.
