Euorpeans learnt the use of this plant from Indigenous peoples of North America and from there it travelled to Europe. Some tribes may have used Black Cohosh as part of a concoction to bring on visions as part of their vision quests. The plant has a reputation of being linked to the spirit world with some believing it to be a good plant to keep evil spirits and also insects at bay. This practical and esoteric property is in part to do with the smell that this plant gives off with many describing it as ‘strong’ and verging on the unpleasant. The early Europeans in the Americas regarded this plant with caution with some women being accused of witchcraft if they were caught with it in their possession. During the late 19th century American Eclectic medicine used Black Cohosh in many of their remedies until the tradition fell out of favour and this herb nearly disappeared into obscurity. The plant was saved by botanists from England and Germany taking the plant back to Europe where it was studied and also used in gardens as an ornamental.
Black Cohosh is a member of the Ranunculaceae family. It is found in rich woodlands and is most common in the south east of America. It is an herbaceous perennial reaching a mature height of over a meter tall. The leaves are large with three compound divisions and irregularly serrated leaflets. Tall plumes of cream to white flowers, on wand-like flower stalks, bloom from May to July. From August to October, seeds develop in capsules that make a rattling sound when shaken at the late end of the season. The roots are dark brown to black in colour, growing thick and knobby and producing large buds on the upper surface.
