This plant was used by tribes of Native American Indians for centuries as an integral part of their herbal plant knowledge. Indigo Herbs has two pure Black Cohosh products that are Black Cohosh Tincture and Black Cohosh Root Tea. Both of these are made in the spirit of passing on the properties first found by the Native American Indians.

In America the early settlers learnt the use of this plant from the Native Americans and from there it travelled to Europe. Some tribes may have used Black Cohosh as part of a concoction to bring on visions as part of their vision quests. The plant has a reputation of being linked to the spirit world with some believing it to be a good plant to keep evil spirits and also insects at bay. This practical and esoteric property is in part to do with the smell that this plant gives off with many describing it as ‘strong’ and verging on the unpleasant. The early European settlers in America regarded this plant with caution with some women being accused of witch craft if they were caught with it in their possession. During the late 19th century American Eclectic medicine used Black Cohosh in many of their remedies until the tradition fell out of favour and this herb nearly disappeared into obscurity. The plant was saved by botanists from England and Germany taking the plant back to Europe where it was studied and also used in gardens as an ornamental.

Black cohosh is a member of the Ranunculaceae family. It is found in rich woodlands and is most common in the south east of America. It is an herbaceous perennial reaching a mature height of over a meter tall. The leaves are large with three compound divisions and irregularly serrated leaflets. Tall plumes of cream to white flowers, on wand-like flower stalks, bloom from May to July. From August to October, seeds develop in capsules that make a rattling sound when shaken at the late end of the season. The roots are dark brown to black in colour, growing thick and knobby and producing large buds on the upper surface.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Black Cohosh Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

 Manufacture Process

At the end of October the Black Cohosh plants are fully mature and ready to be harvested for their roots. The whole plant is dug up and the root cut away from the main plant. The root is then cleaned thoroughly whilst being screened for any insect and animal damage. To dry the Black Cohosh root they are placed in dehumidifiers at a low temperature to ensure that all the chemical constituents stay intact before undergoing a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

neem powder
I have been rubbing the powder on my dog to deter flees and postpone the inevitable last resort of the monthly chemical squeeze. I shall also be mixing it into the soil around plants for diseases and hopefully cure Box blight.
