Black Haw Products

Black Haw is a shrub that is native to the woodlands of central and southern North America and its pretty white flowers and dark berries occur in clusters. The root bark is collected in autumn and it is this part of the herb that is used for its many benefits.

Black Haw has been utilised for millennia by Native American tribes who used it for its astringent and antispasmodic qualities. It was also extensively used by women to remedy a wide range of problems that are particular to the fairer sex.

Indigo Herbs is delighted to offer two examples of this herb in the form of Black Haw Root Tea and Black Haw Tincture.

Taking herbs in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out in a small ml measuring cup, medicine cup or spoon, and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Black Haw Bark Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice and taken when required.

Traditionally Taken: 2-3ml taken 2-3 times per day, or as directed by a Herbal Practitioner.

20 drops from the glass dropper equals approximately 1ml.

After careful harvesting, selection and cleaning the Black Haw Bark used to make this tincture undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

Use 1-2 teaspoons of Black Haw Root Tea per cup of boiling water and simmer for 3-10 minutes depending on taste. Then strain and serve - up to 3 cups per day.

Indigo Herbs Black Haw Root Tea is produced from mature Black Haw plants that have been harvested for their roots. After the roots have been dug up and cleaned they are inspected for animal damage and selected for the best specimens to be cut and made into Black Haw Root Tea. The selected roots are then dehydrated until there is little moisture in the plant material. The dried Black Haw Root is then tested for heavy metals and other pollutants before being made ready for shipping.
