Being a part of the wide ranging system of Ayurveda, pure Brahmi has been used as part of this tradition for thousands of years and is attributed with a wide range of uses. The name Brahmi is one of many titles associated with the goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom. The god Brahma, being her spouse within the Hindu pantheon, is said to be the father of the manifest universe. Usually the female form or spouse of a god represents the power or energy of the male deity in question. In this case Bacopa monnieri was given a name of Saraswati because in Ayurveda it is believed that this plant can boost the same faculties that Saraswati represents within the body. In the same way Brahmi is credited as an important supplement for aiding meditation and presence of mind. The Aryuvedic qualities of Brahmi are said to be 'rasa' (astringent) in taste, 'vipaka' (sweet) after digestion and 'virya' or cooling in effect.
The plant itself is also referred to as Indian pennywort (although not the same as regular pennywort) and is a perennial creeping plant native to the southern Indian wetlands, Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia, and North and South America. It has fleshy succulent oblong leaves with small white flowers.
