Joining our ranks of super healthy wholefoods is the ever popular Buckwheat. Indigo Herbs has this classic seed in the organic, raw version. Raw Buckwheat is very versatile, in its grain form it can be used in stews and soups - Buckwheat flour makes a fantastic gluten-free alternative to regular flour and can be used to bake all of your favourite gluten-free dishes.
Buckwheat is mineral rich, high in B vitamins and contains all of the essential amino acids, making the these seeds a valuable addition to a vegan or vegetarian diet. It is also completely gluten free.
The origins of Buckwheat are thought to be from Southeast Asia, most notably Yunnan province in China. It is here that botanists think domestication occured around 6000 BCE. Although there is also evidence to suggets that Buckwheat was also in Finland around 5300 BCE. It is thought to have traveled all over the world from China and is a crop that survives high altitudes.
