In Mexico this plant has the opposite symbolism to Europe. Because of the Spanish invasion the Aztec’s came to take the Marigold as a sign of death and the destruction of their culture. This has carried forward into the modern day in Mexico where the Marigold is symbolically used during The Day of the Dead celebrations. Since the 12th century the Marigold has been seen as a symbol of love, illumination and happiness in Europe. The Herbalist Macer concluded that there would be improvements in eyesight just by looking at the plant. Also in many European esoteric rites Marigold was used for love magic and protection. In the 1560's, Albertus Magnus wrote in his 'Book of Secrets' that Marigold petals, a bay leaf and a wolfs tooth together were an amulet for ensuring that only peaceful words would be spoken to the wearer. Marigold was also called 'the poor man’s saffron' because it was an inexpensive herb used to flavour cooking during the middle ages.
Today Marigold has many different botanical varieties having been cross bred to change the colour and shape of the flowers. The height of the average Marigold can reach 12-24 inches tall, the leaves are a deep green and spread to a width of 12-18 inches. Flowers come in singles, doubles and semi-doubles. The colours can range from white through gold, yellow, and orange.
