Centaury Plant Products

Centaury Plant Products

Centaury is a species of flowering plant in the gentian family that is native throughout Europe, south to North Africa and east through Eastern Europe to the Middle East and Pakistan. It is an erect biennial herb growing about half a metre in height and is found growing in open woods, meadows and dry grasslands.

The genus Erythraea was originally known as "Chironia", derived from the name Centaur Chiron, an eminent personality in Greek mythology who was well-known for his talent in herbal medicines. Centaury was frequently used in treatment of snake bites and fever in the past, hence the nickname “feverwort”. With a strong bitter principle, it also has a long history of traditional use as a digestive aid.

Indigo Herbs is delighted to offer this herb in the form of Centaury Tincture and Centaury Tops Tea.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out in a small ml measuring cup, medicine cup or spoon, and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Centaury Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice and taken when required.

Traditionally Taken: 2-3ml taken 2-3 times per day, or as directed by a Herbal Practitioner.

20 drops from the glass dropper equals approximately 1ml.

After careful harvesting, selection and cleaning the aerial parts of the Centaury herb used to make this tincture undergo a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

May cause mild abdominal discomfort and cramps. Contraindicated in persons with peptic ulcers.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

Use 1-2 teaspoons of Centaury Tops Tea per cup of boiling water and steep for 3-10 minutes depending on taste. Then strain and serve.

Indigo Herbs Centaury Tops Tea comes from plants that are grown for the specific use as tea. All plants are grown under supervision and the soil is checked regularly for heavy metals and toxins. When this perennial is at peak maturity the leaves are separated from the root, cleaned and air dried in the shade so none of the chemical constituents are destroyed by the sun. The leaves are then tested again for any pollutants before being shipped. This process complies with GMP standards and has the Indigo Herbs seal of approval.
