Chamomile has a history that starts with references to its use from the Egyptians but probably stretching back before this early civilisation. In Egypt this herb was dedicated to the Sun god as a cure for 'Ague', or what is thought to have been acute fever. Egyptian noble women used Chamomile petal as a cosmetic for their skin. The name of Chamomile came from the Greek for 'ground apple' which is a reference to this herbs very unique essence and smell. Chamomile is one of the nine sacred herbs of the 'Lacnunga' (remedies), an ancient Anglo-Saxon text that describes in old English and Latin that describes herbs, plants, prayers and charms. From these esteemed beginnings Chamomile has carried on being a part of everyday European life. In 1911, Frances A. Bardswell noted that Chamomile was a great partner to be planted next to sick and poorly plants. His observations saw that other plants would thrive next to this amazing plant.
There are two types of Chamomile plant that grow wild and are cultivated in Europe, Africa and Asia. These two are the German Chamomile variety and Roman Chamomile variety. Roman Chamomile is native to Western Europe and Northern Africa while German Chamomile is prevalent throughout Europe and North-east Asia. This plant has feathery leaves and creeps along the ground with flowers that resemble the daisy.
