This beautifully scented plant is used for many different applications. These range from a replacement for lawn grass, cooking and to aid the onset of sleep. Here at Indigo Herbs we bring you some expertly prepared Chamomile products that are of the very best quality; these are Chamomile Cut Tea, German Chamomile Tincture, Chamomile Hydrolat, Chamomile Maroc and Chamomile Blue Essential Oils. Chamomile has a history that starts with references to its use from the Egyptians but probably stretching back before this early civilisation. In Egypt this herb was dedicated to the Sun god as a cure for 'Ague', or what is thought to have been acute fever. Egyptian noble women used Chamomile petal as a cosmetic for their skin. The name of Chamomile came from the Greek for 'ground apple' which is a reference to this herbs very unique essence and smell. Chamomile is one of the nine sacred herbs of the 'Lacnunga' (remedies), an ancient Anglo-Saxon text that describes in old English and Latin that describes herbs, plants, prayers and charms. From these esteemed beginnings Chamomile has carried on being a part of everyday European life. In 1911, Frances A. Bardswell noted that Chamomile was a great partner to be planted next to sick and poorly plants. His observations saw that other plants would thrive next to this amazing plant.

There are two types of Chamomile plant that grow wild and are cultivated in Europe, Africa and Asia. These two are the German Chamomile variety and Roman Chamomile variety. Roman Chamomile is native to Western Europe and Northern Africa while German Chamomile is prevalent throughout Europe and North-east Asia. This plant has feathery leaves and creeps along the ground with flowers that resemble the daisy.

Using Aromatherapy in your daily routine is simple, easy and can be enormously beneficial. Pure neat essential oils can be evaporated into the environment and inhaled while products that have already been diluted in an oil can be applied straight to the skin. There are lots of different ways to utilize the pure neat essential oils; these can be made into a room spray or used in an an essential oil burner/ vaporizer.

This is a lovely way to perfume an environment and essential oils are very good at affecting the mood, mind and emotions when evaporated into the air. Adding essential oils to your bath is the best way to ensure the oils are absorbed through the pores of the skin while also inhaling the vapors; maximum benefit can then be had whilst enjoying a soak. Additionally the neat oils can be diluted into a carrier medium. This can be a cream, body butter, face cream, vegetable body oil and bath salts to name a few. For full instructions go to our How to use Aromatherapy page.

Chamomile Blue essential oil can be used in the bath, or vaporized in an oil burner. It can be added to a massage oil or cream. Use 6-8 drops per bath and 10 -18 drops per 30ml of carrier oil. See Essential Oil Dosage Chart

Blends well with; bergamot, clary sage, lavender, geranium, jasmine, tea tree, grapefruit, rose, lemon and ylang-ylang essential oils.

  • Bottled in a pharmacoepial grade brown glass bottle

Manufacture Process

Our essential oils are manufactured to GMP standards using steam distillation or cold pressing.

Indigo Herbs Chamomile Blue Essential Oil is extracted using the "steam distillation" method. In this process the botanical material is placed in a still and steam is forced over the material. The hot steam helps to release the aromatic molecules from the plant material since the steam forces open the pockets in which the oils are kept. Molecules of the volatile oils then escape and evaporate into the steam. The temperature of the steam needs to be carefully controlled - just enough to force the plant material to let go of the essential oil, yet not too hot as to burn the plant material or the essential oil. The steam now containing the essential oil is passed through a cooling system to condense the steam which forms a liquid. The essential oil is then separated from the water and bottled, resulting in 100% pure essential oil.

Essential oils need to be diluted first; never apply an essential oil directly to the skin. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth.

Chamomile Hydrolat is a gentle and soothing floral water that is ideal for use on sensitive, delicate skin. With antibacterial qualities, it can also be used to disinfect wounds and to calm down itchy skin. It is gentle enough to use on babies and can be added to the bath or used as a calming room spritzer.

Chamomile Hydrolat is made during the steam distillation of plant matter that produces both essential oils and hydrolats. During the distillation of a plant, two products are extracted: essential oils, which are fat-soluble compounds, and flavoured waters (hydrolats). Both essential oils and flavoured waters contain the active ingredients of the plant from which they’re extracted. Essential oils and flavoured waters, called hydrolats (floral waters if they’re extracted from a flower), absorb the active ingredients of the plant from which they are extracted. But the levels of active ingredients in hydrolats are lower than in essential oils, which makes them more delicate and particularly suitable for sensitive skin. They are also preservative-free.

It is recommended to perform a patch test to check for allergic reactions. Do not apply to broken skin.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

The botanical ingredients can be made into a herbal tea by infusing the herb in boiling water. Use 1 cup of boiling water per person. Let the tea brew for 5 - 15 minutes. Or alternatively; 1/2 cup of flowers to 2 liters of hot water to add to the bath tub.

Serving:

1-2 tsp Chamomile flowers per 1 cup of boiling water up to 3 times a day

1 teaspoon equals 0.65 grams (1 tsp = 0.65g)
  • Produced to GMP standards.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out in a small ml measuring cup, medicine cup or spoon, and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

German Chamomile Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Manufacture Process

Only the best prime examples of the flowers are used in our Chamomile Tincture. Damaged or underdeveloped flowers are discarded through a process of elimination. The Chamomile flower then undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

Dragonfly Organic Pure Camomile Tea (20 bags). The delicate, daisy-like camomile flower has been celebrated by herbalists since ancient Egyptian times. Derived from the Greek 'Camoemelon', camomile literally means 'earth apple' because the scent of the flowers is reminiscent of fresh apples. The flowers are harvested by hand using a special comb that selects only the biggest buds, leaving the rest to grow to maturity. They are then naturally air-dried, the end result being a deliciously fragrant and gentle infusion.Indigo Herbs has selected some of the best dietary supplements, teas & snacks from other leading health brands to complement our own extensive range of nutritionally dense superfoods, wholefoods, herbal powders and loose leaf teas.
