In all their purity we hope that they will convey all the benefits that they have been known for over the centuries of use.

Chamomile has a history that starts with references to its use from the Egyptians but probably stretching back before this early civilisation. In Egypt this herb was dedicated to the Sun god as a cure for 'Ague', or what is thought to have been acute fever. Egyptian noble women used Chamomile petal as a cosmetic for their skin. The name of Chamomile came from the Greek for 'ground apple' which is a reference to this herbs very unique essence and smell. Chamomile is one of the nine sacred herbs of the 'Lacnunga' (remedies), an ancient Anglo-Saxon text that describes in old English and Latin that describes herbs, plants, prayers and charms. From these esteemed beginnings Chamomile has carried on being a part of everyday European life. In 1911, Frances A. Bardswell noted that Chamomile was a great partner to be planted next to sick and poorly plants. His observations saw that other plants would thrive next to this amazing plant.

There are two types of Chamomile plant that grow wild and are cultivated in Europe, Africa and Asia. These two are the German Chamomile variety and Roman Chamomile variety. Roman Chamomile is native to Western Europe and Northern Africa while German Chamomile is prevalent throughout Europe and North-east Asia. This plant has feathery leaves and creeps along the ground with flowers that resemble the daisy.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

The botanical ingredients can be made into a herbal tea by infusing the herb in boiling water. Use 1 cup of boiling water per person. Let the tea brew for 5 - 15 minutes. Or alternatively; 1/2 cup of flowers to 2 liters of hot water to add to the bath tub.

These Chamomile plants were harvested and grown in Egypt where they underwent a series of checks to maximise quality and production. The flower heads are cut away, cleaned, inspected for quality and damage before being air dried out of direct sunlight. The Chamomile flowers are then tested for pollutants and foreign chemical profiles. This Chamomile Tea is of the highest quality and has been given Indigo Herbs seal of approval.

Chamomile is part of the Asteraceae plant family, which includes ragweed and chrysanthemum, so people with allergies may react when they use chamomile either internally or topically. Chamomile should not be taken during pregnancy or breast-feeding.Chamomile contains coumarin, a naturally-occurring compound with anticoagulant or blood-thinning effects. It should not be combined with warfarin or other medications or supplements that have the same effect or be used by people with bleeding disorders. I am not normally somebody who really likes chamomile, but have to admit that the quality is great, sometimes dried herbs smell dusty or old, but that's definitely not the case with the indigo herbs chamomile. Also, thumbs up for the packaging.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

German Chamomile Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Manufacture Process

Only the best prime examples of the flowers are used in our German Chamomile Tincture. Damaged or underdeveloped flowers are discarded through a process of elimination. The Chamomile flower then undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.
