Chicory is native to western Asia, North Africa, and Europe. The plant has a history reaching back to ancient Egypt where it was believed to purify. The first records of Chicory being cultivated date back to the 17th century and it is now used worldwide for its numerous benefits.

Chicory is an important medicinal plant commonly used in Ayurvedic system of medicine as purifying for the Pitta and Kapha doshas, and well as in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) where Chicory is known as Ju Ju.

Chicory is a perennial herb, with a woody stem of up to 1m in height with a fleshy taproot of up to 75cm in length. The plant has large basal leaves and smaller upper leaves with bright azure blue/light purple flowers.

Chicory Root Tea from Indigo Herbs is made from exceptionally high quality Chicory Roots. It is known for having a strong, robust flavour with a hint of bitterness. Chicory is a wild, somewhat woody plant native to Europe, Asia & North Africa. It is a member of the dandelion family (Asteraceae) and usually has bright blue flowers. Chicory has historically been used as a coffee substitute and is traditionally added to coffee in Spanish, Greek & Turkish cuisines, among others. You can sweeten this tea with your favourite natural sweetener or blend it with sweeter herbal teas.

Chicory Root Tea can be made into a delicious hot drink by decocting the Chicory Root into boiling water. Use 1-2 teaspoons per cup of boiling water and steep for 3-10 minutes depending on taste. Then strain and serve.

Serving:

1-2 teaspoons dried root per 1 cup of boiling water, up to 3 times a day.

Indigo Herbs Chicory Root Tea is produced from mature Chicory plants that have been harvested for their roots. After the roots have been dug up and cleaned they are inspected for animal damage and selected for the best specimens to be cut and made into Chicory Root Tea. The selected roots are then dehydrated until there is little moisture in the plant material. The dried Chicory Root is then tested for pollutants before being made ready for shipping.

Chicory Root Powder is most famously used as a coffee substitute but can also be added to smoothies, encapsulated or mixed with a little juice.

A typical dosage of chicory is one to two grams of powdered dry root up to three times per day.
