A perennial plant, Coltsfoot bears a striking similarity to a dandelion when it blooms in the spring with its star-like golden flowers. An unusual characteristic of this plant is that its flowers bloom and die before the appearance of any leaves, earning it the nickname “Son Before the Father”.
With a long history in Chinese Medicine, Coltsfoot is also known as “Kuan Dong Hua” in Chinese, which literally translated means “winter arrive flower” – due to its propensity for flowering in early spring. It is believed to cover both “qi” and “blood” aspects with its nature of heatless warmth and moistening pungency making it perfect for moistening the lung to loosen phlegm and suppress coughing (hence the Old English name “Coughwort”. Interestingly, before the introduction of matches, the felt like covering could be wrapped in a rag and dipped in a solution of saltpetre – after being sun-dried this made an excellent tinder.
The bright yellow flowers appear early in the spring, prior to the emergence of any leaves. Shaped like a hoof, the top of the leaf surface is smooth and almost waxy in appearance, while the underside is covered with white, wool-like hairs.
