Damiana is a shub native to Mexico which has spread to many countries in South America, the southern United States and the West Indies. A member of the Passifloraceae plant family, the plant has succulent leaves of about 10 to 25 mm long of a brown-yellow colour, serrated with three to six teeth along the edges and can reach a height of 1-2 metres. The small flowers are a yellow trumpet shape that open on the axis of the leaf and are renown for having a musky smell of camphor mixed with camomile.
Historical use of this plant is ancient in origin. The Maya used Damiana under the name 'mizibcoc' believing it had properties that would enhance vision quests while also burning the dried leaves as an incense. The ancient Greeks also had use of this plant referring to it as 'aphrodisiakos' or the 'goddess of love'. Later, references in the writings of the travelling Spanish missionary Father Juan Maria de Salvatierra noted the use of Damiana amongst the native Mexican Indians. During the 1870's Damiana enjoyed some notoriety in the US before being registered in the first edition of the National Formulary in 1888. The plant dropped in popularity during the early 1900's before a resurgence in the 1960's into present day. It is said that Damiana is so highly regarded in Mexico that export of the live plant has been prohibited and the plants status been elevated to the prominent position of 'national treasure'.
