Dong Quai Products

Dong Quai Products

Following the thousands of years of Chinese medical knowledge, we have premium quality Dong Quai, also known as "female ginseng". Indigo Herbs presents Dong Quai Powder, Dong Quai Root Tea and Dong Quai Tincture as the representatives of this effective botanical. Come and join Indigo Herbs in enjoying this amazing ingredient which is said to be most beneficial toward women. You can also choose Dong Quai Capsules from our lovely guest brands.

Although Dong Quai is native to China this plant also has reference in the traditions of Ayurvedic, Native American and Kampo medicine. The meaning of Dong Quai translates as 'proper order' and illustrates the restorative and balancing nature this ingredient is thought to have within Chinese Medical tradition. The root of this herb is thought to do this by its mild warming nature, being an antioxidant and harmonizing the vital energy of the body. Thought to work very well in conjunction with other ingredients Dong Quai is considered to be perfect for those with a Yin profile.

A relative to Celery and a member of the Apiaceae family, Dong Quai is a hardy plant that grows well at high altitude and loves cold, damp and shady environments. The stems grow with a slight purple tint to about a meter in height while fruiting occurs in August and produces clusters of umbrella shaped white flowers and winged shaped seed. Dong Quai takes 3 years to mature before the root is viable to be used in medicine.

Using Herbal and Superfood powders on a daily basis is simple, easy and can be really delicious. The simplest way is to rehydrate the powder in a little filtered water to make a shot, this can easily be prepared once, twice or three times per day if you are taking the herbs therapeutically. However sometimes the herbs can be bitter so the botanical powders can be added to a superfood smoothie instead of just water. The smoothie can be made with a base of nut milk, seed milk or non-dairy milk such as rice milk. Alternatively the main body of the smoothie can be created with fruit or vegetable juices.

Additional superfood and herb powders can be added to fortify the smoothie with extra beneficial properties. The powders are largely dissolvable and can be scooped in and then blended, shaken or stirred until fully mixed with the liquid. Any true Superfood smoothie disciple would advise that the list of possibilities is endless with the goal to feel great and potentially replace a meal with this glass of super goodness. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Powders page.

Another option is to use a Capsule Machine that can be bought from the Indigo Herbs website. Filling capsules with your favourite herb has never been easier when you buy a Capsule machine. You can then be sure that the capsules you are taking are 100% pure ingredients without fillers added by some companies.

This herbal powder can be re-hydrated in water or fruit juice, it can be encapsulated or added to a herbal powder blend. Please consult the Herbal Materia Medica or Medical Herbalist for this botanical ingredients uses.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

Dong Quai Root Tea can be made into a delicious hot drink by decocting the herb into boiling water. Use 1-2 teaspoons per cup of boiling water and steep for 3-10 minutes depending on taste. Then strain and serve - add your favourite natural sweetener if necessary.

Indigo Herbs Dong Quai Root Tea is produced from mature Dong Quai plants that have been harvested for their roots. After the roots have been dug up and cleaned they are inspected for animal damage and selected for the best specimens to be cut and made into Dong Quai Root Tea. The selected roots are then dehydrated until there is little moisture in the plant material. The dried Dong Quai Root is then tested for heavy metals and other pollutants before being made ready for shipping.

Dong Quai contains coumarin, one of the main ingredients in blood-thinning medications like Warfarin. If you are taking Warfarin or another blood thinner, please consult your Healthcare Practitioner before consuming this tea.

For those who are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant, taking Dong Quai is not advisable and may increase the risk of miscarriage. It should also not be taken by those who are breastfeeding, taking oral birth control pills or using hormone replacement therapy.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out in a small ml measuring cup, medicine cup or spoon, and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Dong Quai Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Manufacture Process

Before peak maturity the Angelica sinensis plants are cut and identified by plant experts before the root is cut away from the rest of the plant. Only the best prime examples of the roots are used in our Dong Quai Tincture. Damaged or underdeveloped roots are disregarded through a process of elimination. The root material then undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the blend. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added. It is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.

Dong Quai should not be administered to children or patients with diarrhoea or haemorrhagic diseases, nor should it be taken by pregnant or lactating women, unless under directions of a qualified practitioner.

Solgar Dong Quai (100 Veg Caps)

Solgar Dong Quai contains Dong Quai and is one of Solgar’s Botanical range products.Solgar’s Botanicals are carefully selected from plants growing in the wild or cultivated on special botanical farms. The finest, freshest botanicals are chosen based on a strict set of criteria such as the geographical origin of the raw material, the authentication of the species and the qualities of the raw material. Botanicals have been used by mankind since early history as the beneficial effects of food beyond their nutrient function have been recognised since early times. They have been used through centuries to maintain health and a lot of today’s medicines were originally derived from botanicals.

Botanicals are still the basis for Chinese medicine and are important constituents of many European natural remedies. As Hippocrates said, ‘Let thy food be thy medicine, thy medicine be thy food’. Dong Quai (Angelica Sinensis) is also known as female ginseng and is an herb belonging to the group of plants which also include parsley, carrots and coriander. It can be found in the mountains of China, Japan and Korea, and prefers the cooler climates. It has been an ingredient in Chinese traditional medicine for centuries, as well as being used in Native American and Ayurvedic medicine.

Good to do business with you
I am impressed and grateful that my echinacea bottles come wrapped in a corrugated cardboard and no longer bubble wrap which is very bad for the environment. If you can do it Indigo then other companies should be able to follow your example. Well done you. My order arrived very quickly and I placed my order on the phone with a friendly efficient member of staff.
