Native to North America, this plant has been utilised by the tribes of Native American Indians for centuries. These tribes had varying applications for Echinacea that ranged from wound dressing to tooth ache. The name Echinacea actually stems from the Greek for ‘hedgehog’ or ‘sea urchin’ referring to the dome of spiny seed heads that sit in the centre of the flower. Although it was adopted by European settlers it remained a folk remedy until it was patented by Dr H C F Meyer as a blood purifier and ultimate cure for rattlesnake bite. The latter of Meyer’s claim as a cure for snake bite was short lived but this didn’t stop Echinacea being accepted by the North American Herbalists of the 1900's. The Herbalists of this period presented it in much the same light as it had been used by the Native Americans and soon the popularity of this botanical ingredient spread all over Europe.
The Echinacea plant grows in a small bush with individual fronds growing from the root base. Each stem is individual, with alternate leafing and no branching. Each stem is topped with a single pink or purple flower. The central cone is bristly and is composed of the tightly packed seed heads. Echinacea can be found growing wild in the prairies and woodlands of North America.
