The Eucalyptus tree is one of the most useful trees in the world - it belongs to the same family as tea tree and grows most abundantly in Australia, with more than 800 species they dominate the Australian landscape. The properties of the powerful oil from this tree were well known to the indigenous Aboriginal communities in Australia, where it was (and still is) known as "bush medicine". The gum was extracted from the trees and mixed with water to treat burns, wounds and sores and the leaves were burned and the aroma inhaled to treat respiratory conditions. Eucalyptus was also used to soothe toothaches, staunch bleeding and to repel biting insects.
