Gentian root is classed as a bitter herb from the Gentianaceae plant family that is native to the Alps and Himalayan Mountains regions. It is said to be named after the Illyrian king, Gentius, who ruled over the western part of the Balkan Peninsula that was eventually conquered by the Romans in 160 BCE. Records show that Gentius was one of the first to discover the plant’s medicinal properties and use it to make healing tonics.

Gentian's most prominent use over the ages was as a powerful digestive tonic that was taken to stimulate digestion and boost the appetite (especially when recovering from illness). Gentian Root is still used in alcoholic aperitifs and digestives such as angostura bitters and campari.

Gentian Root Powder can be mixed with fruit juice, water or encapsulated.

Serving:

1 - 2 grams before a meal, or as recommended by a Herbal Practitioner.

Indigo Herbs Gentian Root Powder is produced in from mature Gentian plants which have been harvested for their roots. After the roots have been dug up and cleaned they are inspected for animal damage and selected for the best specimens to be made into powder. The selected roots are then dehydrated until there is next to no moisture in left in the plant material. After milling, the fine powder is tested for heavy metals and pollutants before being made ready for shipping.

Use 1-2 teaspoons of Gentian Root per cup of boiling water and steep for 3-10 minutes depending on taste. Then strain and serve.

Serving:

1-2 teaspoons dried root per 1 cup of boiling water up to 3 times a day

Gentian Root Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice and taken when required.

Traditionally Taken: 2-3ml taken 2-3 times per day, or as directed by a Herbal Practitioner.

20 drops from the glass dropper equals approximately 1ml.
