Having no living relatives and considered a living fossil, this dioecious (species having both male and female plant types) plant has survived many cataclysmic occurrences to be among us today. The fortitude of this tree is well illustrated in the fact that four specimens survived the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. One of these Ginkgo trees was within 1 kilometre of ground zero and is living testament to the species hardiness and longevity.
The genus 'Ginkgo' is the only living species in its division with recognisable fossils dating back 270 million years. Growing to about 30 metres in height, and having the distinctive 'maidenhair' shaped leaves, the species was considered extinct in the Western world up until 1690 when it was viewed in a temple garden by the German botanist Englebert Kaempter. Having rediscovered the tree for the West, Kaempter gave it the name Ginkgo after the Japanese phonetic spelling, 'I-cho', meaning “the leaves that look like a ducks foot”. The Ginkgo trees natural habitat is thought to be China where folk lore says there is a living tree 3500 years old. Both in China and Japan the seed is considered a delicacy with many healthy and life giving properties. Here at Indigo Herbs we hope that you will share in the long tradition of Ginkgo Biloba use that has extended from eastern Asia to our western shores.
Excellent service and fast delivery. Love the amazing choice? I’m just sitting down with a catnip and hemp cup of tea to help with my anxiety and I think it’s really made me feel calmer? Will definitely be ordering again
