Having no living relatives and considered a living fossil, this dioecious (species having both male and female plant types) plant has survived many cataclysmic occurrences to be among us today. The fortitude of this tree is well illustrated in the fact that four specimens survived the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. One of these Ginkgo trees was within 1 kilometre of ground zero and is living testament to the species hardiness and longevity.

The genus 'Ginkgo' is the only living species in its division with recognisable fossils dating back 270 million years. Growing to about 30 metres in height, and having the distinctive 'maidenhair' shaped leaves, the species was considered extinct in the Western world up until 1690 when it was viewed in a temple garden by the German botanist Englebert Kaempter. Having rediscovered the tree for the West, Kaempter gave it the name Ginkgo after the Japanese phonetic spelling, 'I-cho', meaning “the leaves that look like a ducks foot”. The Ginkgo trees natural habitat is thought to be China where folk lore says there is a living tree 3500 years old. Both in China and Japan the seed is considered a delicacy with many healthy and life giving properties. Here at Indigo Herbs we hope that you will share in the long tradition of Ginkgo Biloba use that has extended from eastern Asia to our western shores.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

The production process is a very simple; the tree leaves are usually harvested and are set out to be air dried until they turn a golden yellow colour.

After selection of the best individual dried leaf there is an inspection to guarantee there are no other constituents or pollutants on the plant material. To make sure that all chemical constituents remain intact, this pure leaf has not been heat treated in any way. Indigo herbs brings you this product in its most authentic and purest form, with absolutely nothing added.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Ginkgo Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

 Manufacture Process

Grown in China, the leaf matter of the Ginkgo Tree used to make Indigo Herb's Ginkgo Biloba Tincture undergo stringent checks to insure all leaves develop well whilst adhering to high quality standards throughout their life. After careful selection and cleaning the plant material undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the blend. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added. It is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.

Gingko is not advised for those taking blood thinning agents, such as aspirin or walfarin

Using Herbal and Superfood powders on a daily basis is simple, easy and can be really delicious. The simplest way is to rehydrate the powder in a little filtered water to make a shot, this can easily be prepared once, twice or three times per day if you are taking the herbs therapeutically. However sometimes the herbs can be bitter so the botanical powders can be added to a superfood smoothie instead of just water. The smoothie can be made with a base of nut milk, seed milk or non-dairy milk such as rice milk. Alternatively the main body of the smoothie can be created with fruit or vegetable juices.

Additional superfood and herb powders can be added to fortify the smoothie with extra beneficial properties. The powders are largely dissolvable and can be scooped in and then blended, shaken or stirred until fully mixed with the liquid. Any true Superfood smoothie disciple would advise that the list of possibilities is endless with the goal to feel great and potentially replace a meal with this glass of super goodness. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Powders page.

Ginkgo Powder is best used with boiling hot water and made into a hot drink. Equally it can be mixed into cold liquid such as water or fruit juice.
