The history of the Grapefruit starts fairly late in the 18th century but could have been an earlier hybrid that originated from the Asian subcontinent. Grapefruits were first documented growing in Barbados by a Welshman called Griffith Hughes in 1750. Scientists have found that the fruit is probably a hybrid between the Sweet Orange and the Indonesian Pomelo. Both of these fruits originate in Asia pointing to the hypothesis that the grapefruit could have been a naturally occurring hybrid that was brought to Barbados from the Philippines in the 17th century. Grapefruits became popular when they were introduced to Florida in the 19th century and were selectively bred into several distinct varieties; the tangelo, the Minneola tangelo and the oroblanco all have separate qualities that make them individually outstanding.
Grapefruits have been known by several different names throughout history; ‘Forbidden Fruit’ and ‘the Shaddock’ are just two of these. The shaddock refers to how Grapefruits grow in clumps (a little like a cluster of grapes) but also to a legend that the Grapefruit was initially bred by a man called Captain Shaddock. Grapefruit is an evergreen tree that can reach a height of around 14 meters with dark green leaves and white star shaped flowers. Depending on variety the inside of the fruit can be either white, yellow or red.
