Having been bred all over the world it is hard to know where the Hibiscus flower originated. Egypt, China and India all have incorporated the Hibiscus flower into their medical systems as well as their cultures. The flower features in ceremonies in devotion to the goddess in India while in Polynesia women would traditionally wear a Hibiscus over the left ear to show that she was in a relationship with a man. In folklore Mother Nature curses the Hibiscus flower for boasting about its beauty only allowing it to open in daylight. Also in Greek mythology Adonis emerges from the Myrrh tree and then is transformed into a beautiful human form by Aphrodite. Hibiscus has always had an association with love, lust, beauty and feminine energy which is why it’s used to symbolise these things in traditional love magic.
There are many different Hibiscus hybrids and variants grown all over the world. Grown in temperate to tropical regions, this member of the mallow family can grow into quite large shrubs or small trees. The flowers are ornate, usually with five petals, and can range in colour from red, pink, orange, purple and yellow. Some species of Hibiscus flower change colour with age and all develop seeds developing in a lobed capsule.
