Huanarpo Macho is medium-sized shrubby tree reaching to a height of 12m, with small, bright, reddish-orange flowers. The young branch stems of the Huanarpo Macho tree are shaped like a man's anatomy and they are traditionally referred to as "Higos del duende" or "Elf figs". For centuries these young branch stems have been used in traditional medicine systems to support, aid, and enhance male sexual function as part of the ethnobotanic "Doctrine of Signatures" which determines that the shape/colour or other 'signature' dictates what the plant should be used for.
