Also known as: Barbados Cherry, West Indian Cherry, Cereza, Semeruco, Cerisier, Florida Sweet, Manoa Sweet.

Acerola (Barbados cherry) possesses the highest amount of vitamin C for any plant derived fruits/berries, second only to Camu Camu!  Just one serving provides almost the full recommended daily allowance of vitamin C – this important vitamin is a wonderful antioxidant, safely targeting and neutralising free radicals thus protecting the cells from oxidative stress.  Also a powerful immune booster, white blood cells contain 20 times the amount of vitamin C than any other cell type in the body making it vital for a healthy immune system.  Other benefits include its role in collagen production – an essential part of our connective tissues, and its enhancement of the body’s ability to absorb iron.

Our Acerola Cherry Powder is also very high in vitamin A (beta-carotene), this is well known for its role in eye health especially when it is consumed in conjunction with other antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C - in the body, beta carotene coverts to retinol which produces the pigments in the retina in the eye.  Vitamin A also enhances the body’s immunity against infections by increasing the lymphatic responses against disease forming antigens and by assisting the skin and mucous membranes in repelling bacteria and viruses more effectively.

This highly antioxidant, immune boosting powder is delicious in a smoothie or juice.  You can also experiment by adding it to cakes, flapjacks or pancakes giving your baked goods a supercharged nutritional boost!

Our fruit and vegetable powders are slow-dried to preserve the nutritional content and are 100% natural with nothing added. This makes these powders a perfect choice for using as natural flavourings and colourings.

It’s simple and easy to benefit from the goodness of these superfood fruit and vegetable powders by adding them to smoothies for a superfood boost. However they can be used extensively in food preparation.

Try experimenting with the intense flavours in making raw chocolate, icecream, flapjacks, cakes, breads, biscuits, pancakes to name a few. For full instructions go to our How to use Fruit and Vegetable powders page.

This herbal powder can be re-hydrated in water or fruit juice, it can be encapsulated or added to a herbal powder blend. Please consult the Herbal Materia Medica or Medical Herbalist for this botanical ingredients uses.

Serving:

Add 1-2 tsp to water, fruit juice, Superfood smoothie or vegetable juice.

High in Vitamin A

Vitamin A is the name given to a group of fat-soluble antioxidant compounds.  Two different types of vitamin A are found in the diet; “preformed vitamin A” (also referred to as retinol or retinal) is found in animal products and “pro-vitamin A” is found in plant based foods - the most common type being beta-carotene.  It was the first fat soluble vitamin to be recognised and is sometimes referred to as the “anti-infective” vitamin due to its enhancement of the body’s immunity against infections by increasing the lymphatic responses against disease forming antigens.  It keeps the mucous membranes moist that line the mouth, respiratory passage and urinary tract and enhances the activity of white blood cells.

Known as retinol because it produces the pigments in the retina in the eye, it enables your eyes to adjust to light changes, keeps the eyes moist and improves night vision.  It can also significantly reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.  Vitamin A helps to keep your body free from free radicals and toxins which might cause damage to your skin, helping to keep it soft and supple by ensuring moisture retention.  Vitamin A deficiency can impair iron metabolism which can lead to anaemia despite adequate iron intake.  Playing an important role in cells’ ability to adapt to perform specific functions in larger organs, the richest sources of preformed vitamin A are found in liver, kidney, butter and whole milk, whereas good sources of pro-vitamin A are dark green leafy vegetables and yellow-orange vegetables such as sweet potatoes and carrots.

Vitamin A contributes to:

·         normal iron metabolism

·         the maintenance of normal mucous membranes

·         the maintenance of normal skin

·         the maintenance of normal vision

·         the normal function of the immune system

·         Vitamin A has a role in the process of cell specialisation

High in Vitamin C

Vitamin C, a water soluble vitamin also known as ascorbic acid, is one of the safest and most effective vitamins whose benefits are many.  It is absolutely vital in collagen production – collagen is a simple protein and an essential part of our connective tissue – the very framework of our body.  All of the components that hold our bodies together such as skin, bones, blood vessels, teeth and gums, tendons and cartilage rely upon collagen.  Vitamin C is directly responsible for influencing collagen synthesis and helps to shield us from the symptoms of collagen deletion – most famously scurvy!

A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C can protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals which are harmful by-products of digestion or foreign substances in the atmosphere.  Inside the body it changes form to a negatively charged compound called ascorbate which helps to protect nerve cells and improves psychological function.  It has been known as the antioxidant’s antioxidant because it functions to protect vitamin E from oxidation too, another vitamin that interacts with free radicals to prevent cell damage.  Vitamin C strongly enhances the absorption of iron - when they are consumed and digested together, vitamin C combines with the iron to form a compound that is more easily absorbed.  Crucial to the overall health of the body in its efforts to fight off infections – both bacterial and viral – white blood cells contain 20 times the amount of vitamin C than other cells and require constant replenishment to keep the immune system working to its optimum capacity, especially during and after intense physical exercise.    Whilst highly concentrated in citrus fruits, other rich sources of vitamin C are acerola cherries, leafy green vegetables, red peppers and potatoes.

Vitamin C contributes to:

·         normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels

·         normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones

·         normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage

·         normal collagen formation for the normal function of gums

·         normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin

·         normal collagen formation for the normal function of teeth

·         normal energy-yielding metabolism

·         normal functioning of the nervous system

·         normal psychological function

·         the normal function of the immune system

·         maintain the normal function of the immune system during and after intense physical exercise

·         the protection of cells from oxidative stress

·         the reduction of tiredness and fatigue

·         the regeneration of the reduced form of vitamin E

·         Vitamin C increases iron absorption

Manufacture Process

Our Acerola Cherry fruit powder is freeze dried at a low temperature of less than 34 degrees, to allow slow evaporation of almost all of the water, and preserve all the nutritional content. This fruit must be processed when it is picked as it quickly starts to ferment so freeze dried is the best way to preserve the taste and nutritional content. The frozen berries are then milled into a fine powder.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Ashwagandha Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Daily serving:

A trusted source shared with me a three month ashwagandha trauma release process, which requires a small daily dose of the extract. I am only three weeks in and I'm noticing that my dreams are different. Far more emotional, heavy, thick. A few times I have woken up completely rattled, even though I wasn't having a nightmare. The source confirmed that trauma release happens during the dream-time, when taking ashwagandha. So the product is, in my view, excellent as it is doing what it's meant to. Shipping to Germany was also fast and everything went absolutely flawless. Thank you for this service and product.

Little did I know that it is most likely the stress response that's at the root of my hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Since taking ashwaganda, I am sweating much less than usual, I am sleeping better and without night sweats, and I am calmer during the day. I have also recently started combining Ashwagandha with Rhodiola and Schisandra for a combi punch to the face of stress, fatigue, recovery time after exercise and challenging emotional times. I am well impressed with this product. It's potent and totally works; in unexpected ways for some.

I'm still trying it out so don't feel able to comment on the effects yet. But the taste isn't nearly as bad as stated and I can take it without having to dilute it. I probably put my comment about the dropper bottle in the wrong place. I feel it could be improved as I'm finding the dose measurement imprecise because the lines on the small plastic cup are very faint. Would it be possible either to make the lines more distinct, or better still have marks on the actual dropper to show the dose?

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

To make a tea decoction from this Astragalus root add 1 - 5 teaspoons of dried root to a pan and boil in 300ml - 350ml of water on a stove for 3 - 4 minutes. Strain into a mug and serve

Serving:

1g - 5g, two or three times per day.

Manufacture Process

After 5 years of growth the roots of the Astragalus plants are mature and ready for harvest. Indigo Herbs Astragalus roots are harvested and identified by plant experts before the leaves and small stem parts stripped away leaving only the root. Only the best prime examples of the root are used in our Astragalus Root Tea. Damaged or underdeveloped roots are discarded through a process of elimination. The best root matter is then slow dried out of direct sunlight and tested for pollutants to make sure that you get only the very finest root for your tea. This ensures that the plant is of pharmacoepial grade and is good for purpose.

Using Herbal and Superfood powders on a daily basis is simple, easy and can be really delicious. The simplest way is to rehydrate the powder in a little filtered water to make a shot, this can easily be prepared once, twice or three times per day if you are taking the herbs therapeutically. However sometimes the herbs can be bitter so the botanical powders can be added to a superfood smoothie instead of just water. The smoothie can be made with a base of nut milk, seed milk or non-dairy milk such as rice milk. Alternatively the main body of the smoothie can be created with fruit or vegetable juices.

Additional superfood and herb powders can be added to fortify the smoothie with extra beneficial properties. The powders are largely dissolvable and can be scooped in and then blended, shaken or stirred until fully mixed with the liquid. Any true Superfood smoothie disciple would advise that the list of possibilities is endless with the goal to feel great and potentially replace a meal with this glass of super goodness. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Powders page.

Another option is to use a Capsule Machine that can be bought from the Indigo Herbs website. Filling capsules with your favourite herb has never been easier when you buy a Capsule machine. You can then be sure that the capsules you are taking are 100% pure ingredients without fillers added by some companies.

This Astragalus Powder can be re-hydrated in water or fruit juice, it can be encapsulated or added to a herbal powder blend. Please consult the Herbal Materia Medica or Medical Herbalist for this botanical ingredients uses.

Serving:

1-4 teaspoons up to 3 times per day.

Astragalus Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Serving:

Astragalus Tincture:
Traditionally Taken:  3 - 5 ml, three times a day.
or as directed by a Herbal practitioner.

20 drops from the glass dropper equals approximately 1ml.

  • Produced to GMP standards.
  • Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
  • Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • 100% pure botanical ingredients, absolutely nothing added.
  • Packaged in a pharmacoepial grade brown glass bottle with dropper.

Manufacture Process

After 5 years of growth the roots of the Astragalus plants are mature and ready for harvest. Indigo Herbs Astragalus roots are harvested and identified by plant experts before the leaves and small stem parts stripped away leaving only the root. Only the best prime examples of the root are used in our Astragalus Tincture. Damaged or underdeveloped roots are discarded through a process of elimination. The Astragalus root then undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

In Peru this powder is boiled in water for about 20 minutes before it is drunk but it can just as easily be mixed into a smoothie or herbal powder blend.

Serving:

Traditionally taken: 1 cup of water to 1 teaspoon of Cats Claw Powder, 2-3 times daily.

1 teaspoon equals 3 grams (1tsp = 3g)

This finely milled powder has been made out of the reddish bark of the Cats Claw vine harvested from wild rainforestws. When the plant has reached a maturity of around 8 years old the bark is ready to be harvested. After the all branches have been stripped, the bark is cleaned and slow dried so only a little of the moisture is left in the plant material. After a selection process the bark can then be milled into a fine powder and be made ready for testing. Testing consists of toxicology looking for foreign bacteria, heavy metals and other pollutants. When the powder has passed all the required tests it is made ready for shipping.

Cats Claw contains a lot of tannins and so larger servings may cause mild stomach upset. Always increase servings in slight increments.

Our Estonian Wild Crafted Chaga can be brewed into a tea. Heat in water over a low heat (160°F or 75°C) to extract the phyto-chemicals of this medicinal mushroom. Brew for up to an hour, (will turn a deep brown colour, then drink). The same Chaga can be re-used until the water extracted from the chunk is pale in colour.

Serving:

1 - 2 teaspoons of Wild Crafted Chaga per cup is usually sufficient for one cup of Chaga tea. Remember that the Chaga can be reused.

Wild Crafted Chaga from Indigo Herbs are harvested from Birch trees in Estonia. Only mature Chaga mushrooms are harvested and smaller immature Chaga fungal growth is left until it has reached an acceptable size for harvesting. The Chaga mushroom grows high up on the Birch tree, and is picked in spring and summer. The mushroom absorbs the nutrients and compounds from the tree and makes it more available to humans. Chaga lives in a symbiotic relationship with the birch tree. The experienced fungus expert will break off the Chaga conk (the piece of fungal matter exposed on the trunk or tree branch) with his/her hand and taken back to be prepared for drying. If there is no sun available then the Chaga is usually dehydrated at a temperature no less than 40.5°C. The drying process is done as quickly as possible to insure that no other bacteria or fungus can grow on the Chaga matter. The pure fungus is then broken down to make small Chaga pieces and coarse powder.

There are no known side effects to date from consuming Chaga.

This Chaga Mushroom Extract Powder is a very strong concentrate. It is recommended to take very little. Unlike other Chaga products this Chaga Extract powder does not need to be boiled to extract the precious phytochemical content. It can very easily be added to smoothies, fruit juice, herbal blends and food just as it is.

Serving:

¼ to 1 teaspoon of Chaga Mushroom Extract Powder per day. Do not exceed stated serving.

1 teaspoon equals 2.5 grams (1 tsp = 2.5g)

This Chaga Extract Powder is made from a hot water extraction method where by a Chaga brew is concentrated in special vacuum sealed water evaporators. A small amount of Maltodextrin is then used as a carrier and mixed with the remaining Chaga concentrate before being spray dried. Spray drying is a common method of converting liquids into powder and involves the liquid being passed through a nozzle that makes a very fine spray. As the spray falls through a heated chamber the warm air dries it producing a powder. The hot air and powder are then separated in a ‘cyclone chamber’ and powder collected. This results in our highly concentrated Chaga Mushroom Extract Powder. This extract is made in China but comes from wild crafted Siberian Chaga.

To avoid symptoms of detoxification only use in very small quantities.

Chaga Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Serving:

Chaga Tincture:
Traditionally Taken: 3 - 5 ml, three times a day.
or as directed by a Herbal practitioner.

20 drops from the glass dropper equals approximately 1ml.

Indigo Herbs Chaga Tincture is made from only the finest quality mature Estonian Chaga conks. The Chaga Mushrooms are harvested by experts from Estonian Birch forests. After inspection and drying the Chaga undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form.

This is a ready to eat powder and can be added to hot or cold water, fruit juice or added to a smoothie.

Serving:

A typical serving of cordyceps can be from 1 to 2 grams up to 3 times a day. To avoid symptoms of detoxification do not to exceed the suggested serving.

1 teaspoon equals 3 grams (1 tsp = 3g)
  • Produced to GMP standards.
  • Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
  • Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Re-sealable air tight, foil pouch.
  • 100% pure botanical ingredients, absolutely nothing added.

Manufacture Process

The 'CS-4' strain of Cordyceps was achieved by taking the wild Cordeceps strains:

  • Paecilomyces hepialid Chen and Dai Cs-4

Then by a process of liquid fermintation, producing a viable mushroom with the same chemical composition as the wild Cordyceps variety. This research took many years to complete and has resulted in a mushroom that is no longer only destined for those who can afford it. Indigo Herbs Cordyceps CS-4 Powder is not the wild variety but the next best thing.

  • The research resulted in the Cordyceps strain Cs-4.

Cordycepin 0.4%

Cordycepic Acid 13%

Polyaccharide 5.8%

Avoid in individuals with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to cordyceps, mold, or fungi. Cordyceps may cause dry mouth, nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea or dizziness.

Cordyceps is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women due to a lack of available scientific evidence. Cordyceps may be possibly unsafe in pregnant women, as it may affect steroid hormone levels.
