Juniper Products

The Juniper Berry is the female seed cone produced by evergreen trees belonging to the pine family, which grow in the plains regions of Europe and other areas in the world. These berries have been used as a spice and a herbal remedy for millennia and are possibly most well known for giving gin its distinctive flavour. Ancient Greek texts show that Juniper Berries were used medicinally before their culinary use – they gave the berries to their Olympian athletes in the belief they could increase physical stamina and strength.

Here at Indigo Herbs you can choose from Dried Juniper Berries, Juniper Berry Tincture and the wonderfully freshly scented Juniper Essential Oil.

Manufacture Process

Our essential oils are manufactured to GMP standards using steam distillation or cold pressing.

Indigo Herbs Juniper Berry Essential Oil is extracted using the "steam distillation" method. In this process the botanical material is placed in a still and steam is forced over the material. The hot steam helps to release the aromatic molecules from the plant material since the steam forces open the pockets in which the oils are kept. Molecules of the volatile oils then escape and evaporate into the steam. The temperature of the steam needs to be carefully controlled - just enough to force the plant material to let go of the essential oil, yet not too hot as to burn the plant material or the essential oil. The steam now containing the essential oil is passed through a cooling system to condense the steam which forms a liquid. The essential oil is then separated from the water and bottled, resulting in 100% pure essential oil.

Essential oils need to be diluted first; never apply an essential oil directly to the skin. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Juniper Berry Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice and taken when required.

Traditionally Taken: 2-3ml taken 2-3 times per day, or as directed by a Herbal Practitioner.

20 drops from the glass dropper equals approximately 1ml.

The berries used to make Indigo Herbs Juniper Berry Tincture undergo stringent checks to ensure they develop to their fullest potential, whilst adhering to exceptionally high quality standards. After careful selection and cleaning the berries undergo a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers or women who are trying to get pregnant. Do not take Juniper Berry if you have a kidney disorder.
