Indigo Herbs has always stocked the long standing and effective European botanical plants and Liquorice is no exception. Because of its wide range of uses Indigo Herbs brings you these four top quality Liquorice products in the form of Liquorice Powder, Liquorice Root Cut Tea, Liquorice Root Sticks and Liquorice Tincture. Used throughout the world in varying forms, Indigo Herbs has tried to give you a wide range of options so that you can be free to use this great ingredient in whatever way you see fit.

The reach of this plant spans entire continents and has long been used in Europe as a herbal botanical and sweet delicacy. Being recorded by Dioscorides in his De Materia Medica it is thought that the ancient Greeks learnt about the uses of Liquorice from the Scythians. Later, Roman writers also allude to the plant calling it Radix dulcis. From the Middle East to China this herb spread during the medieval period and was used for differing purposes. The Chinese now use Liquorice as a base for many of their traditional herbal concoctions while in Europe, because it is about 50 times sweeter than sugar, it has become more associated with confectionery.

Mainly cultivated for its roots, the Liquorice plant is a member of the pea and bean family with the name originating from the Greek; glykys meaning 'root', and rhiza meaning 'sweet'. With long fronds comprising many feathery light green to dark green leaves this plant has flowers that can range from purple, violet and also white to yellow. The root system, depending on species, can be very large and can penetrate to a depth of 3-4 feet.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Liquorice Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Serving:

Liquorice Tincture:
Traditionally Taken: 2-3ml taken 2-3 times per day.
or as directed by a Herbal practitioner.

20 drops from the glass dropper equals approximately 1ml.

  • Produced to GMP standards.
  • Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
  • Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Gluten free.
  • 100% pure botanical ingredients, absolutely nothing added.
  • Packaged in a pharmacoepial grade brown glass bottle with dropper.

Manufacture Process

All Liquorice plants are over 3 years old before the mature root is dug up for harvest. The roots are cut away, cleaned, inspected for quality and damage before being air dried out of direct sunlight and tested for pollutants and foreign chemical profiles. The dried root then undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

Liquorice should not be taken by people on digoxin-based drugs. It should also be avoided during pregnancy and in cirrhosis of the liver.

It may interfere with the calcium and potassium absorption. Do not use if you are suffering from osteoporosis, hypertension (increases water around heart).
