Maqui Berry Products

Indigo Herbs Organic Maqui Berry Products are sourced from the Aristotelia chilensis tree native to the temperate Valdivia regions of the Chilean rainforest where they grow naturally in abundance. They are harvested by indigenous families, primarily of the Mapuche tribe who call the fruit "Maki" and regard the tree as sacred. Together with the Canelo and Laurel trees Maqui wood is used in altars for rituals and ceremonies. The berries themselves have historically been used by the indigenous people in traditional meals and also for their numerous health benefits which have been documented as far back as the 15th century.
The small dioeceous tree reaches a height of 4-5m, is an evergreen and in the spring sheds the old cohort, which is used as a carbohydrate source to form the new leaves and flowers, which are small and white. These flowers eventually produce small, dark purple berries, each tree can produce 10kg of fruit per year, which is then sold in local markets.
