While concoctions of all parts of the Marshmallow plant have been used as medicine, a traditional use of Marshmallow can be found in old recipes: Stems of marshmallow were peeled to reveal the soft and spongy pith. This pith was boiled in sugar syrup and dried to produce a soft, chewy confection. The boiling of Marshmallow was also used in times famine. In the 9th century, Emperor Charlemagne ordered marshmallow cultivated in his monasteries. Those about to undergo torture by hot irons during the Inquisition would paint their skin with an ointment of mallow sap, egg white and plantain seeds. A coating of this ointment would lessen the effects of the burns and so hopefully prove their innocence.  Commercial marshmallows are a late-nineteenth-century French innovation, which was a development of a well-used recipe from the old days using the Marshmallow plant itself. It is thought that the first time Marshmallow was used as a sweet was by the ancient Egyptians who mixed the pith of this plant with egg whites and honey to create a sweet not unlike the one we have today. The sweet was so prized that only pharaohs and the extremely rich could afford to eat them.

As the name suggests, this plant grows in areas where there are large bodies of water that keep the soil moist. Marshmallow is a broad and sometimes thin plant that produces pink/white flowers and has leaves that are heart shaped with crinkled, serrated edges.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

Grab a teapot, a cafeteria or your tea making equipment of choice. The botanical ingredients can be made into an herbal tea by infusing the herb in boiling water. Use 1 cup of boiling water per person. Let the tea brew for 5 - 15 minutes. Strain and enjoy.

Serving:

Take 1-2 teaspoons of the herb per cup of boiling hot water, 2-3 times a day.

1 teaspoon equals 1 gram (1 tsp = 1g)

Manufacture Process

Indigo Herbs Marshmallow Leaf  Tea comes from Serbia and is grown for the specific use as tea. All plants are grown under supervision and soil checked regularly for heavy metals and toxins. When this perennial is at peek maturity the leaves and small stems are separated from the root and air dried in the shade so none of the chemical constituents are destroyed by the sun. The leaf cut is then tested again for any pollutants before being shipped. This process complies with GMP standards and has the Indigo Herbs seal of approval.

Because it coats the lining of the stomach, marshmallow may interfere with the absorption of other drugs or herbs. For this reason, it is important to take marshmallow several hours before or after taking other herbs or medications.

My colleague, another IBS sufferer, recommended this product. I was very sceptical as he said it tasted like boiled grass (it doesn't) but I brewed up a pot and it is lovely! I don't drink hot drinks but this is soothing and really lovely! I haven't felt poorly since I have had 2 cups a day! It tastes lovely and I have already ordered 2 more bags to make sure I don't run out! It is great with sugar, honey or just by itself (how I take it) Definitely recommend.

I bought the herbs for medicinal purposes, rather than flavour. The herbs look very fresh.

Indigo Herbs
Product ordered, dispatched and received within 24 hours. Discount voucher for next order included. The only complaint I have is that the herb I ordered, Damiana powder Is the most disgusting tasting substance I have ever come across, no matter what I put it in. If you are considering buying it, get the capsules, I will for my next order.

I am a returning customer to Indigo …
I am a returning customer to Indigo herbs. All previous orders were without problems. On my current order I tried without success to input a voucher code. There was no place to enter the code on the site when I made my order on this occasion. I sent an e mail to this effect to Indigo herbs and the response was to say the least, not very helpful and no follow up to the customer. No phone call, no follow up e mail, nothing. I am to say the least very disappointed and may take my custom elsewhere where it may be most appreciated. The voucher would have saved me the postage costs to Ireland, but could not be inserted on this occasion. This Matter has been resolved and I wish to reaffirm the 5 star rating to Indigo Herbs.
