Here at Indigo Herbs we regard Milk Thistle highly as a plant with numerous healthy functions for the body.

Having a fairly long history, Milk Thistle has been used for more than 2,000 years. The first recorded use was by Dioscorides, a Roman botanist and early pharmacologist who authored the 1,500 year old De Materia Medica. Not only was the Milk Thistle used in Europe; there is evidence that it was used in Aisa within Indian Aryuvedic Medicine and also by Native American Indians. European legend tells that when the Virgin Mary was feeding the baby Jesus a little milk was split onto a thistle beneath her feet which caused the leaf veins to become white. Although the uses of this plant differ from country to country it is usually the seed that is most commonly used today.

Milk Thistle is part of the Asteraceae family and is annual plant meaning that it completes its life cycle within one year. Sometimes growing up to 2 metres in height Milk Thistle grows in a conical shape, with fleshy spiky leaves, and the classic burst of red/purple flowers through the summer months. The seed of the Milk Thistle resembles the seed of the dandelion with many hairs attached so that it might be carried along on a breeze to be germinated further afield.

Using Herbal and Superfood powders on a daily basis is simple, easy and can be really delicious. The simplest way is to rehydrate the powder in a little filtered water to make a shot, this can easily be prepared once, twice or three times per day if you are taking the herbs therapeutically. However sometimes the herbs can be bitter so the botanical powders can be added to a superfood smoothie instead of just water. The smoothie can be made with a base of nut milk, seed milk or non-dairy milk such as rice milk. Alternatively the main body of the smoothie can be created with fruit or vegetable juices.

Additional superfood and herb powders can be added to fortify the smoothie with extra beneficial properties. The powders are largely dissolvable and can be scooped in and then blended, shaken or stirred until fully mixed with the liquid. Any true Superfood smoothie disciple would advise that the list of possibilities is endless with the goal to feel great and potentially replace a meal with this glass of super goodness. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Powders page.

Another option is to use a Capsule Machine that can be bought from the Indigo Herbs website. Filling capsules with your favourite herb has never been easier when you buy a Capsule machine. You can then be sure that the capsules you are taking are 100% pure ingredients without fillers added by some companies.

This herbal powder can be re-hydrated in water or fruit juice, it can be encapsulated or added to a herbal powder blend. Please consult the Herbal Materia Medica or Medical Herbalist for this botanical ingredients uses.

Manufacture Process

At Indigo Herbs we take quality seriously, so the most important factor we consider when supplying a good herbal extract is the quality of herbs used to make the extract, and the highly skilled extraction techniques used. As well as the pure herbal powders, we also supply both Herbal Powder Extracts and Standardized Herbal Extracts.

Standardized extracts have a standard amount of a specific phytochemical and this content is denoted by a percentage. So for example 1g of Milk Thistle 80% Powder Extract (80% Silymarin) contains 800mg of Silymarin, as Silymarin is thought to be the active phyto-chemical in this plant. A Standardized Extract is processed in order to ensure the active phytochemical always occurs in the exact same standardized ratio, which is not the naturally occurring ratio in the crude herb and quite often its "inert" constituents are removed or reduced. Standardized extracts are often extracted with acetone, benzene, methyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, carbon tetrachloride, and other synthetic chemicals that, are removed from the finished product.

Can cause an allergic reaction. Occasionally people report a laxative upset stomach.

I bought this product, as I had previously been buying pre-made Milk Thistle teabags. This is a much cheaper way of consuming milk thistle. I can now make my own teabags. The product arrived swiftly and is packed in a handy resealable pouch. Perfect!

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

At the end of summer when the seed is beginning to harden and loosen from the flower head, the seeds are plucked from the dying plant to be processed. After selection and cleaning the seed is left to harden off before it is prepared to undergo a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the blend. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added. It is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
