The Latin name for Motherwort ‘Leonurus cardiaca’ refers both to the look of the plant and its medical abilities in aiding the heart. Leonurus means ‘lions tail’ which relates to the flowering spears of pink blooms which can make Motherwort reach heights of around 5 feet tall. The leaves are a distinctive part with a three pronged shape that looks a little like a ducks foot in the early stages. As the leaf ages they become more serrated and large. The plant has an overall fleshy appearance with many white hairs covering the whole surface area of the leaves and stems.
