The use of Mucuna is mostly observed within the vast tradition of Ayurvedic (‘wisdom of life’) Medicine. This tradition finds its root in the Indian sub-continent and is intertwined within the back drop of the Vedic religion. According to Ayurveda, human physiology has varying constitutions which are labelled doshas. The doshas are named Vata, Pitta and Kapha are linked to the five classical elements of earth, water, fire, air and ether. The plant Mucuna Pruriens, according to the Ayurveda has the ability to balance these doshas in the body. Scientific research has discovered that Mucuna contains the chemical L-DOPA which is a precursor to dopamine found in the human body.

The Mucuna Pruriens plant (commonly known as Kapikachhu or velvet bean) flourishes in several countries across Asia and Africa and is a climbing shrub that can grow to about 15 meters in height. Indigo Herbs Organic Mucuna Pruriens products herald from India and are sourced via Fairtrade co-operatives, insuring workers are getting a fair wage. Organic standards are kept very high with selection of only the very best plant materials used for our Organic Mucuna Pruriens Powder. This holds true to the Indigo Herbs guarantee of bringing you only the best Organic Mucuna Pruriens powder available.

Also known as: Kapickachhu, Cowhage, Velvet Bean

Using Herbal and Superfood powders on a daily basis is simple, easy and can be really delicious. The simplest way is to rehydrate the powder in a little filtered water to make a shot, this can easily be prepared once, twice or three times per day if you are taking the herbs therapeutically. However sometimes the herbs can be bitter so the botanical powders can be added to a superfood smoothie instead of just water. The smoothie can be made with a base of nut milk, seed milk or non-dairy milk such as rice milk. Alternatively the main body of the smoothie can be created with fruit or vegetable juices.

Additional superfood and herb powders can be added to fortify the smoothie with extra beneficial properties. The powders are largely dissolvable and can be scooped in and then blended, shaken or stirred until fully mixed with the liquid. Any true Superfood smoothie disciple would advise that the list of possibilities is endless with the goal to feel great and potentially replace a meal with this glass of super goodness. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Powders page.

This powder can be added to boiling or cold water before use. Also can be made up in a smoothie or fruit juice. This herbal powder can be encapsulated or added to a powder blend. Please consult the Herbal Materia Medica or Medical Herbalist for this botanical ingredients uses.

The reason for 5 stars is that Indigo Herbs' packaging is very good and the product is decent value. It is a fine, pure powder than can be mixed into any liquid. As for mucuna, I wouldn't say I felt anything miraculous. After mixing and drinking 1/2 - 1 teaspoon with some coconut water, I had a large cup of green tea. This is said to boost the effect. After a couple of hours there was a slight glowing feeling which was enhanced by an espresso coffee. Perhaps if you suffer from very low dopamine then this effect will be more apparent.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Organic Mucuna Pruriens Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

 Manufacture Process

Grown out in the Indian sup continent the crops of Velvet bean used to make our Organic Mucuna Pruriens Tincture undergo stringent checks to insure all plants develop well whilst adhering to high Organic standards throughout their life. After careful selection and cleaning the plant material undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the blend. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is certified by The Organic Food Federation. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added. It is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.

Due to the L-dopa content Mucuna is not recommended for people on L- Dopa medication.
