With a long history of use within the indigenous peoples of the Brazilian rainforest the properties of Muira Puama were not discovered by the western world until the late 19th century. Observing Muira Puama's use amongst the rainforest tribes, these western explorers brought back samples of the bark and roots so that scientists could better understand the properties of this tree. To this day, Muira Puama is still listed in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia as well as having a strong reputation in Germany and other European countries.
Also called 'potency wood', Muira Puama is a member of the Ptychopetalum genus of which only two trees are a part of. Although found mostly in the Brazilian rainforest, the tree has also been observed in French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname. It grows to a height of about 5 metres and has fragrant small white flowers which could be described as having the pungent smell of Jasmine. It is only the roots and bark that are used for medical purposes.
