For the Inca civilisation the Tabebuia avellanedae tree was considered to be of divine origin and was used for practical as well as therapeutic purposes. It is believed the Pau D'Arco tree could even of been used as a medicine before the Inca Empire rose to power. Evidence suggests that the branches of the tree were favoured by certain tribes for fashioning bows; in fact these tribes’ named the tree ‘bow stick’ or ‘bow stem’. The varying names given by different tribes allude to the different qualities that the Pau D'Arco tree possess. The Guarani and Tupi Indians call Pau D'Arco ‘tajy’ which translates as “to have strength and vigour’. Just as these tribes believe that the Pau D'Arco tree produces the best bows, which are durable and tough, it is believed the same applies to the bark when taken as a tonic.
This tree produces beautiful white, pink to purple blooms depending on species. It explodes in colour with big cotton candy bunches of vibrant colour at the end of branches. A member of the Tabebuia genus there are about 100 species of Pau D'Arco. In the rainforests it can grow up to 30 meters in height and 2/3 meters in diameter. Because of its strength it is one of the most desirable trees for construction and the manufacture of tools.
