This common plant has ancient origins with usages stretching from culinary to ritualistic in many different cultures from the ancient Assyrians to the Chinese. Indigo Herbs has within its Peppermint range; Peppermint Leaf Tea, Pure Menthol Crystals and Peppermint Pure Essential Oil. All of these products are from refined and pure examples of the Mentha piperita plant species and represent some of the finest Peppermint products on the market.

The first evidence of Peppermint being used was possibly by the ancient Assyrians from about 2,400 BC. It is thought that Peppermint was ritualistically offered to the Assyrian fire god Nusku. The ancient Greeks also used this plant ritualistically but also in wines, sauces and as wreathes for the heads of noblemen. Theophrastus, the Greek philosopher, attributed the name of peppermint to the story of the nymph Mintho. In Greek mythology Mintho is a partner of Pluto, the god of the underworld, who abducts Persephone to rule the underworld with him. Persephone soon becomes jealous of Mintho and curses the nymph to live forever as the fragrant but lowly plant Peppermint. Later in the Bible it mentions Peppermint as a precious plant that was given as a tax and also as one of the bitter plants that was eaten during the Last Supper. As well as these great cultures Peppermint has been found in Egyptians tombs and mentioned in Jewish writing as an aromatic and astringent herb used with water to clean Synagogue floors.

The Peppermint mentioned above is the forefather of modern Peppermint which is thought to be a fairly modern addition to the mint family. The first mention of Mentha piperita was by the English Botanist John Ray in 1696 who found the herb growing naturally in a field where by it quickly became known for its medical benefits. The Peppermint of today is a naturally occurring hybrid cross of watermint and spearmint can be found throughout its native Europe and now across the world. Just like the spread of the plant in the world, Peppermint can spread quickly once it has pushed above ground producing leaves that are dark green in colour and slightly fuzzy. When flowering, clusters of white purplish flowers emerge in sprays at the ends of the branches. The whole plant gives off a very pleasant aroma that can be smelt if close to the plant.

Natural incense resins are simple and easy to use. The resins, dried leaves and woods need to be burnt to release their aromatic smoke. This smoke is a 100% pure and a great natural way to perfume a room. The resin is burnt on small charcoal disks, the disks need to be set in a heat resistant container for safety purposes. We recommend a purpose made incense burner that is made from brass.

The charcoal disk is lit and as it smoulders and turns grey the natural incense resins can be added. Additional incense can be added until the charcoal has burnt down. This incense experience is aromatic, heady and sensual. Why not bring out your inner perfume maker and enjoy blending different resins together to create the ideal aroma for an occasion. For full instructions go to our How to blend and use Incense page.

To use as an incense:
1. Take a lighter or match to a Charcoal disk, and when it is fully alight then set it safely into a charcoal disk holder, or heat resistant receptacle.

2. When the charcoal disk has turned grey and ash like, then add a couple of crystals.

3. This matter will begin to smolder and release an aromatic smoke.

4. Set the lid on the charcoal burner, and enjoy the sensual experience of the aroma pervading the room.

5. Add more incense when required.

Other uses: Menthol crystals are used commercially in many preparations such as tigers balm, and cough and cold expectorant balms for the chest. At home the crystals can be dissolved in a carrier oil,  butter or cream and applied to the chest, temples, wrists, pulse points as an expectorant.

  • Produced to GMP standards.
  • Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
  • 100% pure botanical ingredients, absolutely nothing added.

Manufacture Process

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

Peppermint is a revitalizing, energising and refreshing botanical that has many uses. Its traditional use is in calming the digestion and reviving the mental energy. Its sweet top note aroma can banish weariness and bring clarity, coolness and calm. Peppermint essential oil can be used in the bath for relieving respiratory symptoms and treating menstrual cramps and PMT. It can be used topically over the stomach area to treat intestinal conditions, or menstrual cramps in a carrier oil or cream. It can be vaporised in an oil burner to create an uplifting and cleansing atmosphere. A steam inhalation can be used to treat nasal congestion and a blocked head cold.

Using Aromatherapy in your daily routine is simple, easy and can be enormously beneficial. Pure neat essential oils can be evaporated into the environment and inhaled while products that have already been diluted in an oil can be applied straight to the skin. There are lots of different ways to utilize the pure neat essential oils; these can be made into a room spray or used in an an essential oil burner/ vaporizer.

This is a lovely way to perfume an environment and essential oils are very good at affecting the mood, mind and emotions when evaporated into the air. Adding essential oils to your bath is the best way to ensure the oils are absorbed through the pores of the skin while also inhaling the vapors; maximum benefit can then be had whilst enjoying a soak. Additionally the neat oils can be diluted into a carrier medium. This can be a cream, body butter, face cream, vegetable body oil and bath salts to name a few. For full instructions go to our How to use Aromatherapy page.

Peppermint essential oil can be evaporated with water in an oil burner, inhaled directly through steam inhalation or used in a room spray. Peppermint oil can also be added to a hot bath, blended into a massage oil or cream and then be applied to the skin. Use 6-8 drops per bath and 10 -18 drops per 30ml of carrier oil. See Essential Oil Dosage Chart

Manufacture Process

Our essential oils are manufactured to GMP standards using steam distillation, extraction or expression. During steam distillation the plant matter is put into boiling water or infused with steam. The steam is collected and the oils are separated from the water. During extraction, a solvent is used to extract the oil, by creating a concrete. This concrete is made up of plant matter, resins, waxes, and essential oils. A second solvent, such as ethyl alcohol is used to extract the essential oils from the concrete, this creates an absolute. During expression the plant matter is pressed (at cool temperatures) to release the oils.

Essential oils need to be diluted first; never apply an essential oil directly to the skin. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth. Avoid if you are taking homeopathic remedies.
