Psyllium Products
Indigo Herbs brings you our premium quality Organic Psyillium Husks which are full of fibre and can help with common intestinal complaints. This seed husk has been used in India for thousands of years and is used in Ayurvedic practice in combination with other remedies. Being a native plant of the Indian sub continent the benefits of Plantago ovata have only recently reached Western shores.
The common Indian name for Psyllium is '(Sat) Isabgol' which comes from the Persian 'asp' meaning horse and 'gul' meaning ear. The translation to 'horse ear' refers to the shape of the pink seed of the Plantago species and its characteristic shape. Being full of digestible and non-digestible fibre this supplement reacts with water producing a paste like substance that helps in regulating bowl movement. The husk does this by expanding up to 10 times its original size in contact with liquid.
In India the Plantago species is usually grown in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and some parts of Madhya Pradesh. The plant usually grows to half a meter with fleshy leaves that are covered in a thin layer of fine hair. This characteristic follows on up the stalk right up to the cluster of flowers at the pinnacle of the plant. When the seed begins to mature the husk begins to peel off the seed and scatter in the wind. Each plant can carry up to 15,000 individual seeds which are carried in pods within the floral clusters.
