Red Clover Products
Red Clover was brought to the Americas by Europeans and was admired for its outstanding properties by Indigenous peoples of North America who swiftly adopted the plant into their herb lore. Red Clover was particularly significant for the Christians of the medieval period who likened the three bladed leaf to the holy trinity. The crescent markings on the leaves were also thought to be an indication that Red Clover could help with cataract following the Doctrine of Plant Signatures. The plant is also loved by animals and insects. Even today it is a favourite feed for cattle because of its high nutritional content. The plant has been given the title Bee Bread because bees love the sweet smelling flowers. The plant itself is a survivor and can pick up nitrogen molecules, from special nodules, from the air if it isn’t getting enough from the earth.
Perennial, sometimes biennial herb; leaves with three leaflets with a long leaf stalk, upper leaves sometimes have no stalk. The flowering head is short-stalked or stalkless and comprises many flowers which are about 10-15 mm long and a rose-purple colour. The small oblong fruit pod is retained within the mature flower and opens to shed the seeds.
