According to legend the Chinese Emperor Ti from the Chin dynasty ordered 300 soldiers and 300 hundred beautiful courtesans to set sail and bring the Reishi mushroom back to his kingdom. Because of the scarcity of this mushroom in the wild only the Emperor and affluent upper classes were able to benefit from its medicinal properties. Although the name comes from Japan, this mushroom can be found in the cold mountainous regions of China and Korea also. Preferring a natural habitat of damp shady forests the Reishi fungus grows at the base of deciduous hardwood trees where it comes in six different colours and varieties. These are red, purple, green, white, yellow, and black. It is generally held that the red varietal holds the most healing properties.
Hailing from the Lucidum (meaning 'shining') family of fungus, and having derived its generic name from two Greek words meaning 'bright skin' (ganos, derma), this mushroom is classed as almost being luminous in appearance. Another interesting property of this mushrooms anatomical composition is that it is classed as a polypore. This means that the body of the mushroom doesn't have any gills where the stalk meets the flat top of the fungus. This medicinal mushroom has a long traditional history of use in the east and is now gaining popularity and respect in the west.
Really pleased with my purchase, which arrived really quickly and I was also kept updated at every stage of the process. The product is really good quality which I think is also evident from the deeper colour of the infusion. Nice woody taste and in a fresh foil sealed packet. I had previously bought some from another company and the content was predominantly all stems.
