Saffron comes from the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus) and has been cultivated for more than 3,000 years. It is extremely expensive because of the labour intensive method of harvesting the long red stigma's that protrude from the blooms of Crocus sativus. It is these stigmas that are the prized crop that are prixed even today. Originating in Greece, the health virtues of Saffron slowly spread throughout the world.
