Sage is mentioned in all the main herbals as having special properties not only for the body but also curing certain esoteric maladies. It was widely used by Native American Indians to cleanse and purify when made into "smudge sticks" and burned to clear away negative energy. Sage was revered so much by the Romans that whoever was given the job of harvesting this herb had to wear special clothes and cut the plant with a knife that wasn’t made out of iron. Giving a lofty status to this herb didn’t only extend to the Romans; in the 10th century Arab physicians believed sage could impart immortality if it was taken with regularity. The popularity of this plant only grew with time as it spread to Asia and the Chinese acquired a taste for Sage Leaf Tea. It is reported that the Chinese were trading 3 pounds of tea for 1 pound of sage leaf with Dutch merchants. It might be for this very fact that King Charlemagne of France decreed that all imperial farms should grow sage in large amounts.
With all the popularity of this plant it is no wonder that it comes in many different specie type. Salvia officinalis is the original sage that comes from Europe and was the herb highly sought after by Asians in the past. Sage reaches to about half a meter in height and is perennial evergreen subshrub. It has woody stems and grey fleshy leaves that are covered in fine white hairs and visible resin glands that give the herb its distinctive aroma. Flowers are usually purple but also come in white to red shades.
