At one point in history this plant was so highly respected that it was traded nearly at the same price as gold! Indigo Herbs has a similar reverence for this herb except for the price! The two products that we hold in our sage range are a top quality Sage Leaf Tea and Sage Tincture. Both of these products come highly recommended for those who wish to see what magical properties are held in this sacred herb of ancient Europe.

Sage is mentioned in all the main herbals as having special properties not only for the body but also curing certain esoteric maladies. Sage was revered so much by the Romans that whoever was given the job of harvesting this herb had to wear special clothes and cut the plant with a knife that wasn’t made out of iron. Giving a lofty status to this herb didn’t only extend to the Romans; in the 10th century Arab physicians believed sage could impart immortality if it was taken with regularity. The popularity of this plant only grew with time as it spread to Asia and the Chinese acquired a taste for Sage Leaf Tea. It is reported that the Chinese were trading 3 pounds of tea for 1 pound of sage leaf with Dutch merchants. It might be for this very fact that King Charlemagne of France decreed that all imperial farms should grow sage in large amounts.

With all the popularity of this plant it is no wonder that it comes in many different specie type. Salvia officinalis is the original sage that comes from Europe and was the herb highly sought after by Asians in the past. Sage reaches to about half a meter in height and is perennial evergreen subshrub. It has woody stems and grey fleshy leaves that are covered in fine white hairs and visible resin glands that give the herb its distinctive aroma. Flowers are usually purple but also come in white to red shades.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Sage Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Serving:

Sage Tincture:
Traditionally Taken: 2-4ml, 3 times a day
or as directed by a Herbal practitioner.

20 drops from the glass dropper equals approximately 1ml.

Manufacture Process

The parts of the Sage officinalis plants used are the leaves and annual shoots which contain the most chemical constituents. These shoots are then harvested to undergo a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

Alcoholic extracts of Salvia have quite a high concentration of thujone which can have toxic effects in large doses. The herb should be avoided during pregnancy because it is a uterine stimulant. The essential oil should always be used with great care as even small doses can be poisonous

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! Manufacture Process

Indigo Herbs Sage Leaf Tea hails from Albania and is grown for the specific use as tea. All plants are grown under supervision and soil checked regularly for heavy metals and toxins. When this perennial is at peek maturity the leaves are separated from the root and air dried in the shade so none of the chemical constituents are destroyed by the sun. The leaf cut is then tested again for any pollutants before being shipped. This process complies with GMP standards and has the Indigo Herbs seal of approval.

The herb should be avoided during pregnancy because it is a uterine stimulant.
