Sage Products

At one point in history this plant was so highly respected that it was traded nearly at the same price as gold! Indigo Herbs has a similar reverence for this herb except for the price. Our Sage range comprises of top quality Sage Leaf Tea, Sage Tincture and White Sage Herbal Incense. Within our guest brands you can choose from Sage Capsules, Sage Deodorant and a selection of lovely Herbal Teabags.

Sage is mentioned in all the main herbals as having special properties not only for the body but also curing certain esoteric maladies. It was widely used by Native American Indians to cleanse and purify when made into "smudge sticks" and burned to clear away negative energy. Sage was revered so much by the Romans that whoever was given the job of harvesting this herb had to wear special clothes and cut the plant with a knife that wasn’t made out of iron. Giving a lofty status to this herb didn’t only extend to the Romans; in the 10th century Arab physicians believed sage could impart immortality if it was taken with regularity. The popularity of this plant only grew with time as it spread to Asia and the Chinese acquired a taste for Sage Leaf Tea. It is reported that the Chinese were trading 3 pounds of tea for 1 pound of sage leaf with Dutch merchants. It might be for this very fact that King Charlemagne of France decreed that all imperial farms should grow sage in large amounts.

With all the popularity of this plant it is no wonder that it comes in many different specie type. Salvia officinalis is the original sage that comes from Europe and was the herb highly sought after by Asians in the past. Sage reaches to about half a meter in height and is perennial evergreen subshrub. It has woody stems and grey fleshy leaves that are covered in fine white hairs and visible resin glands that give the herb its distinctive aroma. Flowers are usually purple but also come in white to red shades.

Sage essential oil is high in the plant compound known as “thujone” which has many benefits, but in high amounts can cause convulsions so it is an oil to be used with care. The thujone found in Sage essential oil has a regulatory effect on hormones which makes it extremely useful for menstrual and menopause problems. It also has a stimulatory effect on the digestive system and can be diluted in a pure carrier oil and rubbed in the abdomen to relieve digestive upset.

Diffusion in an aromatherapy oil burner will purify and cleanse the space. It can also help to calm the nerves and help with grief or depression whilst sharpening the mind and mental focus.

Blends well with; bergamot, lavender, lemon and rosemary essential oils.

Using Aromatherapy in your daily routine is simple, easy and can be enormously beneficial. Pure neat essential oils can be evaporated into the environment and inhaled while products that have already been diluted in an oil can be applied straight to the skin. There are lots of different ways to utilize the pure neat essential oils; these can be made into a room spray or used in an an essential oil burner/ vaporizer.

This is a lovely way to perfume an environment and essential oils are very good at affecting the mood, mind and emotions when evaporated into the air. Adding essential oils to your bath is the best way to ensure the oils are absorbed through the pores of the skin while also inhaling the vapors; maximum benefit can then be had whilst enjoying a soak. Additionally the neat oils can be diluted into a carrier medium. This can be a cream, body butter, face cream, vegetable body oil and bath salts to name a few. For full instructions go to our How to use Aromatherapy page.

Sage essential oil can be used in the bath, or vaporized in an oil burner. It can be added to a massage oil or cream. Use 6-8 drops per bath and 10 -18 drops per 30ml of carrier oil. See Essential Oil Dosage Chart

  • Produced to GMP standards.
  • Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
  • 100% pure botanical ingredients - no solvents are used in the extraction process
  • Bottled in a pharmacoepial grade brown glass bottle.

Manufacture Process

Our essential oils are manufactured to GMP standards using steam distillation or cold pressing.

Indigo Herbs Sage Essential Oil is extracted using the "steam distillation" method. In this process the botanical material is placed in a still and steam is forced over the material. The hot steam helps to release the aromatic molecules from the plant material since the steam forces open the pockets in which the oils are kept. Molecules of the volatile oils then escape and evaporate into the steam. The temperature of the steam needs to be carefully controlled - just enough to force the plant material to let go of the essential oil, yet not too hot as to burn the plant material or the essential oil. The steam now containing the essential oil is passed through a cooling system to condense the steam which forms a liquid. The essential oil is then separated from the water and bottled, resulting in 100% pure essential oil.

Do not use if pregnant of breastfeeding.

Sage essential oil should always be used with great care because of the high thujone content. Essential oils need to be diluted first; never apply an essential oil directly to the skin. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

Grab a teapot, a cafeteria or your tea making equipment of choice. The Sage Leaf can be made into an herbal tea by infusing the herb in boiling water. Use 1 cup of boiling water per person. Let the tea brew for 5 - 15 minutes. Strain the leaves and enjoy.

Serving:

1-2 grams per cup of boiling water, three times a day.

1 teaspoon equals 1 gram (1 tsp = 1g)
  • Produced to GMP standards.
  • Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
  • Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Re-sealable air tight, foil pouch.
  • 100% pure botanical ingredients, absolutely nothing added.

Manufacture Process

Indigo Herbs Sage Leaf Tea comes from sage plants grown for the specific use as tea. All plants are grown under supervision and soil checked regularly for heavy metals and toxins. When this perennial is at peak maturity the leaves are separated from the root and air dried in the shade so none of the chemical constituents are destroyed by the sun. The leaf cut is then tested again for any pollutants before being shipped. This process complies with GMP standards and has the Indigo Herbs seal of approval.

The herb should be avoided during pregnancy because it is a uterine stimulant.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out in a small ml measuring cup, medicine cup or spoon, and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Sage Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Serving:

Sage Tincture:
Traditionally Taken: 2-4ml, 3 times a day
or as directed by a Herbal practitioner.

20 drops from the glass dropper equals approximately 1ml.

  • Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
  • Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • 100% pure botanical ingredients, absolutely nothing added.
  • Packaged in a pharmacoepial grade brown glass bottle with dropper.

Manufacture Process

The parts of the Sage officinalis plants used are the leaves and annual shoots which contain the most chemical constituents. These shoots are then harvested to undergo a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

Alcoholic extracts of Sage have quite a high concentration of thujone which can have toxic effects in large doses. The herb should be avoided during pregnancy because it is a uterine stimulant. The essential oil should always be used with great care as even small doses can be poisonous
