Schisandra Products

Schisandra Products

Following thousands of years of practice, Chinese Medicine has honed and focused its foundations whereby it has elevated some ingredients to being more important than others. Here at Indigo Herbs we have a fantastic range of these important Chinese ingredients which includes our range of Schisandra produts. Indigo Herbs stocks Schisandra Powder, Schisandra Berries, and Schisandra Berry Tincture which are all of the highest quality coming from renown sources in China.

The Schisandra berry has the unique attribute of having a taste and sensation which covers all 5 of the basic flavours; these are: salty, sweet, sour, spicy and bitter. For thousands of years Schisandra berries have been used to compliment Chinese cooking as well as a general health tonic. This plant has the rare quality of being an adaptogenic for the human body which means that Indigo Herbs Schisandra products are a great dietary supplement for everyday use.

Native to North and North-eastern China, Schisandra chinensis is similar in cultivation to that of grapes meaning that it needs a moist humus rich soil and relatively balanced humidity and light. A climbing vine that is cultivated in long rows with the red berries harvested at the end of July.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

Schizandra Berries can be decocted by boiling in water for 10-15mins to prepare a herbal tea drink.

Serving:

Use: 1 -3 grams per 1 cup of water 3 times per day. Do not exceed suggested dose.

  • Produced to GMP standards.

Using Herbal and Superfood powders on a daily basis is simple, easy and can be really delicious. The simplest way is to rehydrate the powder in a little filtered water to make a shot, this can easily be prepared once, twice or three times per day if you are taking the herbs therapeutically. However sometimes the herbs can be bitter so the botanical powders can be added to a superfood smoothie instead of just water. The smoothie can be made with a base of nut milk, seed milk or non-dairy milk such as rice milk. Alternatively the main body of the smoothie can be created with fruit or vegetable juices.

Additional superfood and herb powders can be added to fortify the smoothie with extra beneficial properties. The powders are largely dissolvable and can be scooped in and then blended, shaken or stirred until fully mixed with the liquid. Any true Superfood smoothie disciple would advise that the list of possibilities is endless with the goal to feel great and potentially replace a meal with this glass of super goodness. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Powders page.

Another option is to use a Capsule Machine that can be bought from the Indigo Herbs website. Filling capsules with your favourite herb has never been easier when you buy a Capsule machine. You can then be sure that the capsules you are taking are 100% pure ingredients without fillers added by some companies.

This herbal powder can be re-hydrated in water or fruit juice, it can be encapsulated or added to a herbal powder blend. Schizandra berry powder can be added to boiling water before use. Do not exceed suggested dosage.

Serving:

1 to 3 grams up to twice a day.

1 teaspoon equals 3 grams (1 tsp = 3g)
  • Produced to GMP standards.
  • Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
  • Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Re-sealable air tight, foil pouch.
  • 100% pure botanical ingredients, absolutely nothing added.

Manufacture Process

Indigo Herbs Schisandra Powder is the whole Schisandra Berry finely milled into powder form. Grown to maturity until the end of July, the berry is picked, cleaned and then dried in shade so none of the chemical constituents are lost. When all the moisture has dried from the berry it is then milled into a fine powder ready for shipping. Grown in a spot of natural splendor where all the soil is completely free of industrial pollutants, you can be sure of getting only the purest Indigo Herbs Schisandra Powder available.

Average doses of herbal preparations are considered safe and nontoxic. Mild side effects may include indigestion and skin rash. Schisandra may promote contractions of the uterine muscles and thus should not be used by pregnant women.

Do not take Schisandra if you suffer from epilepsy (seizures, uncontrollable shaking).

If you have had a long term chronic illness as I have had, for me an autoimmune condition following a strep infection over twenty years ago, then Schisandra is something that you owe yourself to try. It hasn't been a miracle but has had a tremendously beneficial effect by promoting a sense of well being that has continued for a year This after years with trials of immune suppressing therapies under neurologists

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Schisandra Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Serving:

Traditionally Taken: 1-3ml up to 3 times per day.
or as directed by a Herbal practitioner.

Manufacture Process

Grown to maturity until the end of July, the berries are picked, cleaned, selected and then dried in shade so none of the chemical constituents are lost. The schisandra berries used to make Indigo Herbs Schisandra Berry Tincture are grown in a spot of natural splendor where all the soil is completely free of industrial pollutants. The whole berries undergo a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the blend. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added. It is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.

Average doses of herbal preparations are considered safe and nontoxic. Mild side effects may include indigestion and skin rash. Schisandra may promote contractions of the uterine muscles and thus should not be used by pregnant women.

I have had intestinal inflammation for several years, for which probiotics did nothing to alleviate. Cutting out sugar and wheat helped immensely but still the discomfort of my colon inflating and deflating like a balloon throughout each day and night, unless I fast from food, bothers me. Enter adaptogenic herbs. Schisandra is the third component of a trilogy of adaptogens I've recently incorporated into my daily life, along with Ashwagandha and Rhodiola. I've been taking each one individually once per day, and at different times of the day, because they produce different effects. Schisandra seems to work best for me first thing in the morning on an empty stomach (with Rhodiola at midday and Ashwagandha in the evening). Be aware that you may experience some side effects, albeit mild. The only side effect I experience is a dry mouth, which I don't mind because I need to increase my water intake, so now I have a reason to drink more. I am most aware of my IBD-type condition at night when I'm lying down and resting. There has never been any pain and my bowel moves daily. From the first dose of Schisandra I noticed a toning or tightening feeling in my lower gut, and it continues. I seem to be detoxing faster that usual too, as my facial skin unusually broke out in pimples. Along with the other benefits I'm sure will become apparent, such as the rebalancing of the stress response, this tincture is superb and I recommend it highly.
