Originating in its natural habitat of Russia and China, this herb has a long history of use in Chinese medicine where it has the name Ci Wu Jia. About 2,000 years ago the great Chinese herbalist Li Shih Chen in his exhaustive catalogue of medicinal plants noted Siberian Ginseng as a superior ingredient to be used as a tonic. According to Li Shih Chen Siberian Ginseng also has the characteristic of being able to conduct and nurture 'Chi', the life giving force, inside the body. These days Siberian Ginseng is used by Russian astronauts, athletes and as an adaptogen for all manner of symptoms and health benefits.
Native to the mountain forests of Russia, China and Japan, this plant is a member of the Araliaceae family and can be commonly found at the base of cliffs amongst oak trees. It can grow to a height of about 2 metres and tolerate a broad range of environmental conditions. Flowering in July, most of the flowers are hermaphrodite in nature.
