The History of this herb stretch back to the tribes of Native Americans where Skullcap was used by the Cherokee Indians in a ceremony to introduce teenage girls into womanhood. During the 17th century Skullcap was thought to be a cure for rabies with a Dr. Van Derveer claiming to have cured over 4,000 cases in both animals and humans. His claim was soon brought to ground by a group of his peers but the names Mad dog Weed and Mad Dog have stuck as alternative titles for Skullcap.

Growing to 3 foot in height this plant can be found in wooded areas in the eastern United States. The leaves are a vibrant green with scalloped edges and blue to purple flowers that bloom from July through to September. The name Skullcap derives from its root name in Latin 'Scutella' meaning 'small dish' or 'tray'. Both the Latin and the common name refer to the shape of the flower and how they resemble the shape of a dish or hat.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

The botanical ingredients can be made into a herbal tea by infusing the herb in boiling water. Use 1 cup of boiling water per person. Let the tea brew for 5 - 15 minutes.

Serving:

1-2 teaspoon cut herb per 1 cup of boiling water up to 3 times a day

1 teaspoon equals 1 gram (1 tsp = 1g)
  • Produced to GMP standards.
  • Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
  • Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Gluten free.
  • Re-sealable air tight, foil pouch.
  • 100% pure botanical ingredients, absolutely nothing added.

Manufacture Process

Before peak maturity these Canadian Skullcap plants are cut and identified by plant experts before the leaves and small stem parts stripped away. Only the best prime examples of the leaf are used in our Skullcap Leaf Cut Tea. Damaged or underdeveloped leaf is disregarded through a process of elimination. The best plant matter is then slow dried out of direct sunlight and tested for pollutants to make sure that you get only the very finest leaf for your tea.

Do not take alongside other tranquilizers or sedatives.

Very happy with the tea, good quality. I enjoy taking it just before bed with a little honey, as it was a little too bitter on its own. I am a very poor sleeper and this tea helps me to feel soothed and relaxed. I have a very stressful assessment week coming up so shall be taking it along with me to drink to help calm my nerves!

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Skullcap Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

Serving:

Manufacture Process

Before peak maturity these Canadian Skullcap plants are cut and identified by plant experts before the leaves and small stem parts stripped away. Only the best prime examples of the leaf are used in our Skullcap Tincture. Damaged or underdeveloped leaf is disregarded through a process of elimination. Plant material then undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the blend. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added. It is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.

Do not take alongside other tranquilisers or sedatives.

I have been rubbing the powder on my dog to deter flees and postpone the inevitable last resort of the monthly chemical squeeze. I shall also be mixing it into the soil around plants for diseases and hopefully cure Box blight.
