Stevia is sometimes added to yerba mate, a traditional tea drunk in western South America, from Paraguay to Argentina. Stevia has been used as a sweetener and as a herbal medicine by the indigenous peoples of Central and South America for thousands of years. Stevia came to the attention of the west in 1899 when a Swiss botanist documented it and described it's unusually sweet taste. Stevia seems to have then been largely ignored until the 1930s when two French chemists isolated two glycosides that give Stevia it's sweetness. These were named stevioside and rebaudioside. In the 1970s in Japan, Stevia cultivation commenced as an alternative to artificial sweeteners. The Japanese now eat more Stevia than anywhere else, where it accounts for 40% of all sweeteners consumed. Today Stevia is cultivated and used as a food in many countries and is increasingly being accepted for the marvellous, health promoting sweetener that it is.

Stevia rebaudiana is a perennial shrub with very bright light green leaves. It can grow up to 1 meter tall. Belonging to the Aster family of plants, Stevia Rebaudiana is native to South America and is grown commercially in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Thailand, China and Israel.

Using Herbal and Superfood powders on a daily basis is simple, easy and can be really delicious. The simplest way is to rehydrate the powder in a little filtered water to make a shot, this can easily be prepared once, twice or three times per day if you are taking the herbs therapeutically. However sometimes the herbs can be bitter so the botanical powders can be added to a superfood smoothie instead of just water. The smoothie can be made with a base of nut milk, seed milk or non-dairy milk such as rice milk. Alternatively the main body of the smoothie can be created with fruit or vegetable juices.

Additional superfood and herb powders can be added to fortify the smoothie with extra beneficial properties. The powders are largely dissolvable and can be scooped in and then blended, shaken or stirred until fully mixed with the liquid. Any true Superfood smoothie disciple would advise that the list of possibilities is endless with the goal to feel great and potentially replace a meal with this glass of super goodness. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Powders page.

Another option is to use a Capsule Machine that can be bought from the Indigo Herbs website. Filling capsules with your favourite herb has never been easier when you buy a Capsule machine. You can then be sure that the capsules you are taking are 100% pure ingredients without fillers added by some companies.

Stevia is extremely sweet and should be used in very small quantities. Use as desired

This Stevia 95% standardised Extract has been made by extracting the two main unique glycosides, stevioside and rebaudioside from the raw plant material.

A Standardized Extract is processed in order to ensure the active phytochemical always occurs in the exact same standardized ratio, which is not the naturally occurring ratio in the crude herb and quite often its "inert" constituents are removed or reduced. Standardized extracts are often extracted with acetone, benzene, methyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, carbon tetrachloride, and other synthetic chemicals that, are removed from the finished product.

Those with diabetes should use high amounts of stevia with caution and monitor their blood sugar levels as medications may need adjusting. Stevia is extremely sweet and only needs to be used in very small quantities.

At first I found it to have a bitter taste, but this seems to be because even though I thought I was reducing the quantity as required, I was not, after some reduction I find your claim to be non bitter to be true I suggest you include a small spoon= I teaspoon with your product or at least explain that if getting a bitter taste customers may need to reduce the quantity to taste.
