Wild Strawberry is mentioned in Roman literature and has been a favourite of the French since the 14th century. It was a chosen food of French King Charles V who had 1,200 strawberry plants in his royal garden. From this period onward the strawberry appeared in illuminated manuscripts and in many different forms of artwork all over Europe. The wild strawberry was cultivated up until in the early 18th century until the French bred American and Chilean varieties together in the 1750’s which we know today as the common garden strawberry. The garden strawberry has much larger fruit than any wild variety and soon became prevalent throughout the world as the only variant to grow because of its marvellous fruits.
