This fascinating plant is known to South Americans as ‘Brazilian Ginseng’ even though it doesn’t have any genetic resemblance to the Ginseng family. Following on from this nick name Indigo Herbs brings our Suma Root Powder to the forefront as one of the most beneficial adaptogenic Amazonian plants on the market. Suma is also called ‘para toda’, meaning ‘for all things’, which is in direct relation to this plants ability to help a multifaceted range of bodily complaints.

It’s no wonder that the Amazonian peoples have been using this plant for thousands of years to help keep their bodies healthy.  It has even been reported to be taken by the Russian Olympic team to help them build energy, increase endurance and muscle mass. This is no surprise since the Suma root contains within it an array of vitamins, minerals, electrolytes to help with water retention and 19 amino acids for muscle development. The Suma plant has been a focus for medical researchers wishing to understand the vast chemical components held within and its ability to help maintain a healthy body.

The Suma plant grows into a bush and then topples over to grow as a vine that travels across the ground of the Brazilian rainforest. Leaves are long, dark green and tough whilst the flowers are very small, white, and grow on individual stalks. The rambling root system is complex and can grow to a very large lateral size.

Using Herbal and Superfood powders on a daily basis is simple, easy and can be really delicious. The simplest way is to rehydrate the powder in a little filtered water to make a shot, this can easily be prepared once, twice or three times per day if you are taking the herbs therapeutically. However sometimes the herbs can be bitter so the botanical powders can be added to a superfood smoothie instead of just water. The smoothie can be made with a base of nut milk, seed milk or non-dairy milk such as rice milk. Alternatively the main body of the smoothie can be created with fruit or vegetable juices.

Additional superfood and herb powders can be added to fortify the smoothie with extra beneficial properties. The powders are largely dissolvable and can be scooped in and then blended, shaken or stirred until fully mixed with the liquid. Any true Superfood smoothie disciple would advise that the list of possibilities is endless with the goal to feel great and potentially replace a meal with this glass of super goodness. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Powders page.

Another option is to use a Capsule Machine that can be bought from the Indigo Herbs website. Filling capsules with your favourite herb has never been easier when you buy a Capsule machine. You can then be sure that the capsules you are taking are 100% pure ingredients without fillers added by some companies.

Suma Root Powder can be re-hydrated in water or fruit juice, it can be encapsulated or added to a herbal powder blend/Smoothie. Please consult the Herbal Materia Medica or Medical Herbalist for this botanical ingredients uses.

Manufacture Process

Indigo Herbs Suma Root Powder comes from its indigenous home of Brazil. After the plant has reached full maturity, the extensive root system is dug from the ground. This process is painstaking since the roots are far traveling and sometimes entangle with other roots. The Suma roots are then cleaned and screened, chopped up and air dried out of the sun for a short time before being placed in a specially engineered dehydrator. After all the moisture has been evaporated the Suma root pieces are milled into a fine powder and is made ready for shipping.

Not suitable for people with oestrogen-positive cancers.

The product is not very finely milled and slightly fibrous. But it is a hard root that has been well prepared and can be added to water or juices and simply mixed in. It doesn't dissolve or swell up if soaked in liquid. Its great to be able to get this unusual adaptogen in the UK and from a reliable prompt supplier. At least I did not have to pay extortionate customs duties as with some suppliers who pretend to be UK-based and yet import from their USA base, even getting the postage costs wrong. Well done Indigo herbs APW

I bought suma root powder to make up a herbal formula found in Paul Pitchford's 'Healing with Wholefoods'. As it is only one part of a formula, I can't distinguish the effect of the suma element itself. But the mixture is working very noticeably well for me so the suma root powder must be playing its part. I find that I am less tired, I feel calmer and I am sleeping well, all of which effects are associated with suma root.
